PreSchool-Grade 2-Ellie and her uncle, L.L. Bear, take a fishing trip. Complications involving a fishing fly and a kingfisher result in the young bear getting stranded in a tree without her rod. Yet, from that vantage point, she manages to snare a trout. Following Uncle L.L.'s example, she decides to leave the creature in its watery home. This teddy bear's adventures offer only a slight resemblance to real-life fishing experiences of either humans or bruins. The idealized, static illustrations add little to the wordy text. Trademarks often have livelier incarnations as toys than as book characters, and these L.L. Bean bear creations may appear in other guises. Libraries can pass on this in favor of such titles as Jane Resh Thomas's Elizabeth Catches a Fish (Clarion, 1977; o.p.), Nancy Luenn's Nessa's Fish (Atheneum, 1990), and Patricia McKissack's A Million Fish...More or Less (Knopf, 1992).
