This was a book I really enjoyed, and as I went through it following five immigrants on their way to the promised land, it was educating as well. I got to learn about daily life, relationships and social standards in new york at the beginning of the 20th century. There are a lot of real happenings mentioned in the book, which, as for me, made it easier to put things in perspective. As I started reading, I could barely put the book down.

I just got through reading the book. It was really good I like reading books about the turn of the century. it had a lot of historical facts about early New York. it was interesting to see how Tin Pan Ally was and how racial prejudice was alive and well in new york too I would recomend the book.

Early 20th century immigration is fascinating to me because that's when my own grandparents came through Ellis Island from Hungary. This book brought to life their fears and exploits and the bravery needed to seek out a new home land. Having been to Ellis Island and read a lot about it, too, I thought the author wove authentic elements and details of what an immigrant experienced. I recommend it highly.

My husband borrowed this book but returned it before I had a chance to read it. "Ellis Island" was of interest to me also, so I purchased a used book.

Meticulously researched, but horribly written,

A friend suggested I read this because I'm interested in historical fiction. And this guy is published? Amazing.Too many characters, each one "Forrest Gump"-ized into managing to meet or be involved with some Major Cultural Event of the great age of immigration. Shallow characterization, aggressively bad dialogue, this book reads as if it were written for one of those bad TV movies starring Meredith Baxter Birney and Perry King. |
