The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook gives insight to the struggles of our ancestorial immigrants. Poingnat stories are revealed through their personal accounts as well as their recipes. This review is from: The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook: The Story of Our Common Past Told Through the Recipes and Reminiscences of Our Immigrant Ancestors (Paperback)
This is a book filled with wonderful, 'real traditional' recipes. While my family came through Ellis Island from Hungary I enjoyed reading other country's recipes and plan on trying many of them. The history of Ellis Island that is included is fascinating and something we should all know about as Americans. I am planning on giving this book as a gift for several friends and family mambers.

"The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook" should be required reading for any descendant of 19th century or 20th century Immigrants. The first chapter of the book tells 'The Story of Ellis Island', with photos and drawings. Throughout the book the photos and drawings of immigrant scenes and of immigrants are informative and evoke wonder at the daring of our ancestors. There also are hundreds of recipes in chapters devoted to specific areas of Europe and with proper homeland identification. Many of the recipes are very simple. However, authentic meals from most of the various homelands can be prepared from them. There are individual stories of immigrants. And, some very helpful text and illustrations about Ellis Island, Geneolgical searches, recording family history, making oral histories and other helpful notions, such as collecting family recipes. Finally, there is a decent index of recipes.
I recommend this cookbook and informations source highly.

Why so crazy expensive ???,

I was at the Ellis Island ferry a couple of days ago and they sell this plastic ring bound book in their gift shop -- I cant remember the exact price, but it is probably less than $20. I am thinking $15-$17.
Why are people selling it here for these crazy prices ? it is not a hard to get or out of print item. It's available to tourists everyday. I hate to see people being taken advantage of.

Historic Recipes Told Through Immigration Stories,

This book was so fun. I read it from beginning to end. I love finding out the history behind our American foods. The recipes in this book felt so real. They didn't represent the rich or the advantaged people who immigrated to America. The recipes came from immigrants who gave everything they had to make it to America. The ingredients in the recipes are so simple (from dandelion greens to soda crackers) but are so full of hope. I loved that just about every recipe was accompanied by a personal story from the immigrant coming to America or even from the modern day family member who is offering their memories of grandma and her wonderful cooking. The recipes told stories to me. I could picture the hardships that these people endured in their travels. I've tried a few of the recipes. I loved the simplicity of instructions and the little homey tips offered by the submitters to this book. This was way more than a cookbook. It was a history book.
