Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 --Attractive, serviceable introductions to two national monuments. In five readable chapters, each book traces the background and historical significance of its subject and includes a timeline, visitors' information, and a detailed index. There's plenty of information for students writing reports and prospective visitors without overwhelming recreational readers. Black-and-white and full-color photographs and reproductions capture the drama and importance of these sites. However, the maps are small, confusing, and downright misrepresentational. Plenty of other titles are available on Pearl Harbor and World War II for this age group. Fisher's Ellis Island: Gateway to the New World (Holiday, 1986) provides excellent historical coverage and Jacobs's Ellis Island: New Hope in a New Land (Scribners, 1990) includes current information on the renovation of the facility.
