3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Reading
I am enjoying these stories but not as much as The Elm Creek Sampler. The author waxes on and on about slavery in The Runaway Quilt and guilt by association which gets old at times. Otherwise these are good stories with a history of quilts that most would have no knowledge of.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!, April 2, 2007
This review is from: An Elm Creek Quilts Album: The Runaway Quilt/The Quilter's Legacy/The Master Quilter (Elm Creek Quilts Series 4-6) (Hardcover)
Are you looking for a book on friendship, love and quilts? Or just one of the three? Than this is the book for you. "An Elm Creeks Album" is the collection of novels 4-6 in Jennifer Chiaverini's wonderful series about Elm Creek manor and the wonderful people conected to it. In "The Runaway Quilt" the series main heroine Sylvia Compson are presented with a quilt that is connected to Elm Creek manor and to slavery, and we follow her quest to find out about her ancstors and their lives during the later half of the 19th century. It is a wonderful weave of contemporary fiction and historical fiction, and Ms. Chiaverini's love for quilts and friendship among quilters fills the stories with warmth! The second book in the album is "The Quilter's legacy" - Sylvia is searching for her mother's lost quilts, and while on the look for them we learn about her mother's childhood, her love for Sylvia's father and for their children. Like the previous novel this is also a combination of contemporary and past time, but while the past in "The runaway Quilt" is portrayed in the form of a diary, the past in "The Quilter's legacy" is brought to us more directly via every other main chapter being the story of Sylvia and every other is about her Mother. Like the other novels in the series "The Quilter's legacy" i filled with warmth and love. The last novel in the album is "The Master quilter" - here we follow Sylvia's friends in their lives' ups and downs while they work on making Sylvia's bridal sampler quilt - another marvolous story! I love these novels, and i warmly recomend them to you! I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Great Quilting Adventures with the Elm Creek Quilters!, July 15, 2007

You don't have to be a quilter to enjoy the three stories combined in this volume. Novels 4, 5, and 6 in the Elm Creek Quilters series by Jennifer Chiaverini do not disappoint. If you enjoyed the first 3 novels in the series, you will enjoy continuing the saga in these next 3. I especially enjoyed the first story in this volume ("The Runaway Quilt"). Historical fiction lovers will especially appreciate this riveting story pertaining to the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. Many thanks to Ms. Chiaverini for continuing to bring us more and more stories in this marvelous series.

Once again, Jennifer Chiaverini doesn't disappoint--who can beat having the next three novels in her series bound together in one book?? These stories are even better than the first three that were bound together in The Elm Creek Sampler! They are "page-turners" that make you stay up late into the night to find out what happpens next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful journeys with quilts!, March 10, 2008
Here is a wonderful series of 3 books on the Elm Creek Quilts and Sylvia Compson. In Runaway Quilt, here is the story told in both the earlier days and current times concerning quilts used to help runaway slaves in the underground railway. What does a quilt hanging on the clothesline mean and why are the centers of the log cabins black? This is both a fascinating story and one that takes us back in time giving us some historical perspective.

A Quilter's Legacy is just that, what quilt legacy has Eleanor Bergstrom left for her daughter, Sylvia? Here we read about Sylvia and Andrew traveling the US both to see his family(do we hear wedding bells in their future?). Sarah has found a website for missing quilts and has entered her drawings and info on Sylvia's quilts of which I believe there were 5 she knew were ones that Claudia had sold. What happens to the quilts, where are some found and what condition is like a mystery unfolding. Of course it won't be all good news but there are many twists and turns.

The last book is the Master Quilter. Sylvia and Andrew marry without the help of the Elm Creek Quilters except for Sarah and Matt. Being caught off guard, the quilters decide to make a wedding quilt from 12 x 12 blocks that are submitted by anyone who has known Sylvia or has been to Quilt Camp. The lives are other members of the Elm Creek Quilters are further developed with some finding many challenges such as Bonnie or Judy. In the midst of this there is funny scene with Mary Beth Callahan and Diane at Quilt Guild meeting along with an unfortunate robbery. This book really spices up the lives of the quilters.

Once again these three books make for great reading no matter if this is the first of the series you have read. So sit down with some tea and enjoy a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Elm Creek Quilts Album Series 4-6, October 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: An Elm Creek Quilts Album: The Runaway Quilt/The Quilter's Legacy/The Master Quilter (Elm Creek Quilts Series 4-6) (Hardcover)
I have gotten really hooked on the Elm Creek Quilt series. I have read 6 of the books in the series so far and listened to 2 of the books on audio tapes. It is really fun to get to know all the characters in the books because they reoccur in all the books. I love to quilt so each book talks about different quilts they make. The Runaway Quilt has a historical genre. It deals with the use of quilts as signals for the underground railroad. Anyone who loves quilting and history (since the books usually reflect back to when the main character Sylvia was younger or her ancestors) will love these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction Mystery, November 9, 2009
This review is from: An Elm Creek Quilts Album: The Runaway Quilt/The Quilter's Legacy/The Master Quilter (Elm Creek Quilts Series 4-6) (Hardcover)
This book really sparks interest in quilters' history as well as American History. Given that I find American history a bit difficult for me to absorb, this book certainly does make it easier--by intertwining history with quilting. It keeps my interest by having a very descriptive fictious drama and light mystery. I believe this book will appeal to quilters of all levels, history buffs and mystery lovers alike. I would certainly recommend this read to anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge of any of those fields. It's a great introduction to a more detailed read of history.

I am enjoying The Elm Creek Quilts Album novels. This is the second set of 3 novels by the same author. Good reading if you like family stories, if you are a crafter / quilter and like some historical info added to the storyline.

I bought this collection of stories for my wife, an ardent quilter, along with the stories 4-6 in another volume. Since we have order all the books in the series of 12. That should tell you something. All the stories involve quilts and quilters at some level and all examine the way in which people can become estranged from each other and the ways in which that can be overcome (sometimes) These books are recreational reads--easy diversions. My wife thoroughly enjoys them.

5.0 out of 5 stars ELM CREEK SERIES A MUST TO READ, January 21, 2012
This review is from: An Elm Creek Quilts Album: The Runaway Quilt/The Quilter's Legacy/The Master Quilter (Elm Creek Quilts Series 4-6) (Hardcover)
Every book in this series fills in details about current life at Elm Creek Quilt Camp, which is located in a family mansion in Pennsylvania, whose matriarch is a wonderful and complex character. Within each book is a character study of one person either of past family or current staff. Some good historical fiction involved.
