Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Jennifer Chiaverini and the Elm Creek Quilts series
“Chiaverini’s themes of love, loss, and healing will resonate with many, and her characters’ stories are inspiring.” —Publishers Weekly

“Chiaverini has an impressive ability to bring a time and place alive.” —Romantic Times Book Reviews

“Emotionally compelling.” —Chicago Tribune on Sonoma Rose

“Jennifer Chiaverini has made quite a name for herself with her bestselling Elm Creek Quilts series. From the Civil War to the Roaring Twenties to contemporary settings, these novels have offered suspense, romance, and, at times, in-depth looks into the social, political, and cultural differences that helped shape a nation.” —BookPage

“Chiaverini excels at weaving stories and at character development. We can relate to the residents of Elm Creek Valley because they remind us of folks we know—a cousin, an aunt, or a grandmother.” —Standard-Examiner (Utah)

What a disappointment. As a huge fan of Jennifer Chiaverini and the Elm Creek Quilts series, I eagerly preordered this book back in August. Now that it has arrived I am hugely let down. I'm not sure what I was expecting--but when the subtitle starts out with "New Fiction . . ." I would have hoped for more than one 15 page vignette. Just so potential buyers know, the vast majority of this book is like a concordance--an encyclopedic listing of all the characters, settings, and "artifacts" from the novels. I'm not sure why anyone would need this. Those of us who are fans already know all this stuff, and if you are not a fan, you would have no interest whatsoever.

The parts I did enjoy were a comprehensive timeline that includes events from all the novels and a map of the layout of Elm Creek Manor.

Truthfully, I felt that I got a better "peek" into the world of Elm Creek Quilts from J.C.'s various quilting books, with photos, patterns and excerpts describing the quilts featured in the novels. (This companion does have a small color sections with photos of some of those same quilts.)

I can't help but wonder if this signals the end of the Elm Creek Quilts series. J.C. has published two, soon to be three, historical novels that have nothing to do with Elm Creek Quilts. You can't blame her if she's ready to move on after twenty books in the Elm Creek series. But you can blame her for putting out a book like this that takes advantage of her many fans' loyalty. I bought it because it says "Elm Creek Quilts" on it, but it wasn't worth it. Save your money. Track down copies of the Elm Creek Quilts pattern books instead.

There were so many things that I had forgotten from the other books so it was nice to have this companion to remember all of the details. Makes me want to go back and read the series again.

A great companion to Jennifer's others books, if you have read them. I don't think it would be suitable to a reader who hasn't read any of the Elm Creek books. But it does give a good insight into the characters, makes you think more about them as real people. Not a book you would read from cover to cover, but instead pick it up and use a reference to the book you are currently reading. Would recommend it if you already know some of the characters Jennifer has written about.

Excellent resource for Elm Creek Quilt books. Includes the Bergstrom family tree, a detailed list of the characters that have come and gone in the series, and which book they were introduced in.
