Best book of poetry for young children,

This is the best collection of poems for children and the illustrations cannot be beat. Bought this book 20 years ago for grandchildren and now are buying more for their children. I am so glad it is back in print.

I love Golden Books, I grew up on them. When I got older I figured out why - Eloise Wilkin was the best illustrator! I had many of books with her illustratons. I used to think that they were actually about me, that is how wonderful her aristry is! When I found this book, I knew that I had to buy this for my baby. As it is, reading is one of the most important things that you can do for your baby, so I love to sit down and read the poems to my 8 month old son. This book just can't be beat.

Poems to Read to the Very Young,
By
This review is from: Eloise Wilkin's Poems to Read to the Very Young (Lap Library) (Board book)
I loved this book when I received a copy for my now 25 year old. I wanted this copy for his new baby daughter.
It is nice, and sturdy, so that a child can handle it. It is not an exact duplicate of the old edition, and some of my favorite poems and illustrations by Elouise Wilkins were missing. I don't know the reason for editing the original, but my son and I know the old one from memory. The baby and her Mom don't know the difference, and I managed to pull off a trade and get my old book back!

A Classic that should be in every toddler's collection,

This book has great classic poems that are simple and fun for little ones. It's set up similar to Poems and Prayers for the Very Young by Martha Alexander--each spread has a few poems with illustrations including something relevant to each poem. The only difference is that this is a board book, nice and sturdy for toddlers, and this one includes charming pictures by Eloise Wilkin. This is a big book compared to most board books that are designed for little hands. This one is about 8 inches square, made to be read on your lap.

This is a simply exceptional book! It called be called nothing less than a "classic." Every child and adult will want to read these poems again and again. I still quote from the poems, "Bedtime" and "High-heeled Shoes," more than twenty years after I first learned them. I can't wait to read these poems to my own children someday!

A charming book of poems for children,
This review is from: Eloise Wilkin's Poems to Read to the Very Young (Lap Library) (Board book)
I initially picked up this book in a bookstore because of the beautiful illustrations. I have since bought several as presents for friends and family. It is an anthology of poems, so some of the poems are better than others, but on the whole the selection is very nice.
My son, who is now 2 and a half years old, knows 3 or 4 of these poems by heart and loves to hear his favorites when a related subject comes up during the day. For example, Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Swing" when we are at the park. This book is a lovely way to introduce appreciation for rhyming, rythmic language and general literary beauty. Enjoy!

Very nice selection of poems, including Christina Rosetti and Robert Louis Stevenson. The illustrations are pretty, but like others by Wilkin they are subdued, not likely to jump out and grab the attention. That's not necessarily a negative, though. My two preschoolers enjoy hearing the poems and also enjoy the pictures.

I grew up with these poems; it's the first book I ever read by myself. The poems are truly beautiful and catchy. Sometimes I'll find myself mumbling the bathtime poems as I turn the shower on or the woolly blanket poem when curled up on the couch. I was ecstatic when I saw that they had re-released this book. My family's original copy was so well-read the pages were falling out. However, when we compared the books side to side we discovered that there were quite a few poems missing from the new edition! Fuzzy Wuzzy, New Shoes, and quite a few others were absent. I'm not sure whether they couldn't get the rights to them, or if they thought that the book would be too large because it's a hardboard, but it was truly a disappointment. I'm still glad for the copy and I look forward to sharing the poems with my future children, but I'll always have a nagging feeling, knowing that there's many wonderful poems omitted. Regardless, the book is beautifully illustrated and the poems are quite pleasing. A definite must-have for any parent or parent-to-be.

I loved Poems to Read to the Very Young when I was a child, and it is just as good now! I'm reading it with my 10 month old son, and we love it. I do want to point out that many of the poems and drawings in the original book are not in this board book version. I plan to get the original when my son is old enough not to chew on it.
