This is the first in-depth survey of the oboe during its Golden Age, tracing the history of the instrument from its invention through its many mutations as it adapted to the changing demands of composers. The author describes in detail the instruments, players, makers, and composers, as well as how and where it was played, and who listened to it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`Haynes' choice of title is splendid; and he succeeds admirably at reinforcing the concept of the oboe's eloquence.' Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society

`Bruce Haynes has already produced two invaluable reference works: his oboe bibliography and his thesis on pitch. This makes a third. Players will obviously need to read it, but it has much to offer all involved in baroque music' Early Music Review

`The quantity of information on instruments, makers, players, social context and music given here is phenomenal, and it is all coherently set out - it is easy to find ones way around without consulting index or contents list.' Early Music Review, no.76

`Well organised and ... easy to use for reference without recourse to the index ... original' Early Music Review, no 76

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate resource for oboe wonks, January 18, 2009
By
Prof Bruce Haynes is a renowned authority on the baroque oboe (or "hautboy"), the two-keyed ancestor of the modern instrument. He has also made some wonderful recordings of the works of Bach and other 18th-c. composers, played on historical oboes. My baroque-oboe teacher recommended this (along with other books by Haynes) as required reading for beginning oboists, and in particular those, like this reviewer, who are learning to play the two-keyed "hautboy". The Eloquent Oboe is full of background information on the instruments, their use by 17th & 18th century composers, and even the musicians who played them. There are also detailed discussions of playing technique, including dozens of helpful tips for beginning players. AND it is well-written, even fun to read, without skimping on the details oboe wonks crave. I give this book 5 stars.
