4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds from a mysterious community, October 20, 2002

This review is from: Else Where (Audio CD)
I don't really know this kind of music, except that it is intently "exceptional". I like that, and I like the energy in his playing. His pianist is a willing accomplice in that the ideas stay compelling without...I dunno, sounding like an exercise? I would like to find out what music these guys listen to for inspiration. But who told this guy that plinking is listenable? Plinking. Oooh boi.

Jim Hall is the furthest thing from my mind. Sonny Sharrock with out the distortion. Better melodic ideas. Musical accompianment that is musical. G'wan, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Surprise, January 30, 2001

This review is from: Else Where (Audio CD)
I picked this one up on a whim (the price was right). I generally prefer guitarists that manipulate their "sound" more than Morris. His playing is like Jim Hall's mad scientist brother or something, by that I mean its crazy but clean and structured. I also find Shipp to be hit or miss. I don't get into his "full on" percussive stuff as much as his more lyrical work (like his blue series and the latest Ware). Here these two come together, weave and bob with PArker really holding down and driving the music.

If you have an interest in these players, I definitely recommend this set

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Talent, December 17, 1999
This review is from: Else Where (Audio CD)
Joe Morris plays free, yet with a clear tone. It is as if Jim Hall were trying to keep up with Ornette Coleman or Albert Ayler. The result is rewarding, unlike anyone else. There is energy, poise and purpose. He seems to play better here, against Shipp's piano, then by the saxophone of Ken Vandermark on the weaker album, Like Rays. I think we have much to look forward to from this talented guitar maverick.
