Book Description

October 31, 2006 0444824782 978-0444824783 1
This dictionary includes some 9200 terms, each with a definition and often and additional descriptive text in English, the terms being translated in French, German and Spanish. It is more complete than similar previously published dictionaries or glossaries, and contains all fields of soil science as well as some adjacent fields of other earth sciences, agriculture and engineering. Present concepts and definitions are detailed along with earlier concepts, not only for historical reasons but also for developing new ideas. Concepts, terms and definitions usual in literature of various countries are discussed and compared, to offer an appropriate exchange of ideas. Soil classifications and methodologies for soil investigation coming from a score of European, American and other countries and international organisations are presented, and correlations between names of soil taxa in different classifications are suggested.

Readers active in all branches of soil science will find accessible answers to many of their questions, either directly referring to procedures used in the organisations where they work, or related to way of thinking in other countries. Readers active in other branches, but needing information on soils, will also find answers to this dictionary of great assistance to their research.

* Over 9200 terms with definitions in English and translations in French, German, Spanish
* Includes all fields of soil science and many connected sciences
* All present-day terminology with inclusion of earlier, classical concepts and terms
* Terminology in current USDA Soil Taxonomy, FAO World Reference Base or Soil Resources, and other documents from different countries

Granted the "N.Cernescu" award from the Romanian Academy on Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Overall, the dictionary will be useful for everybody dealing with soil science, from students looking up terms heard in a lecture to 'high grade position' researchers working on a special soil science topic who need definitions of terms from other topics. For natural scientists in general, the dictionary can just be interesting to look through, and they can learn that soil science is the basis for all natural sciences and is necessary for it."
- S.K. Woche, Institute of Soil Science in JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY, 2007

4.0 out of 5 stars SSSAJ Review, September 26, 2008
This review is from: Elsevier's Dictionary of Soil Science: Definitions in English with French, German, and Spanish word translations (Hardcover)
This general purpose dictionary of soil science has 9188 terms, each with a definition in English (British spelling) and terms translated in French, German, and Spanish. An index of terms in each of these latter three languages is included. With the expansion of international collaboration in the soil sciences, this feature alone makes the dictionary a valuable reference book. The acid-free paper is high quality and the type setting is easy to read, making it an attractive volume for the tactile reader, who may enjoy flipping through its pages. There seems to remain a need for hardcopy reference material even in our electronic age, when one might argue that online access is more efficient and cost effective.
The authors' scope is "all fields of soil science and some related fields of science ... perhaps included too many terms of the related fields ..." It covers 26 subject areas, and the authors note some difficulties with uniformity of terminology. I was generally satisfied with the scope and accuracy of definitions offered. However, the reader is bound to find errors. It also includes six "Annexes" or appendices with information such as soil taxonomy.
I expect to refer to this dictionary regularly in my personal library, even if primarily to find its multilingual translations of soil-related terms. Others may debate the cost/benefit of purchasing such a volume and decide to wait for Elsevier to publish an online version with hyperlinked text.
