2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas but needs more room or more focus, May 22, 2009

DC's Elseworld's line took familiar characters and put them in unfamiliar situations. In this case Barbara Kesel creates a world without Batman and Supermen but where Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) and Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) are the world's finest heroes.

It's an interesting premise and Kesel throws in a lot of fun changes. Batgirl's loyal assistant is spoiled playboy Bruce Wayne, Supergirl's lover is billionaire scientist Lex Luthor, the Joker is in love with Batgirl and commits crimes to get her attention, Gotham City is a police state monitored by Batgirl's Oracle Program.

And there's more. Lots more.

And that's the problem. Too much time is spent on other random changes like President Elvis Presley, an African-American Captain Marvel, a heroic Ambush Bug, new characters like Interceptor and other distractions.

The two stars really don't get enough screen time. It's like the creators thought they had more room than they did.

This book would still be a fun read for $5 or so, but it's out of print and selling for much more. If you can find a cheap copy add a star, if give it a pass.
