Editorial Reviews

Most of us know Brian Fallon as the frontman for the Gaslight Anthem, an act who started out in Jersey basements and slowly built their way up to headlining New York s Radio City Music Hall. Despite the success Fallon has had with his main band he s always loved decidedly less rocking acts such as the Afghan Whigs and Tom Waits. The Horrible Crowes his new side-project alongside longtime friend Ian Perkins is his lounge-friendly tip of the hat to the acts who have shaped another side of his musical vision.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING EFFORT WELL DESERVING OF FIVE STARS!!!!! September 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD
The wife and I were watching a Springsteen DVD (Hydepark) when she brought my attention to Brian Fallon singing with Bruce. Then one night when I was getting ready to check out for the day, David Letterman introduced GASLIGHT ANTHEM as the musical guest. Man was I taken by that performance! Gaslight lit it up! I became an instant fan. The next day I bought all of their CDs, checked out their website, and became somewhat interested in learning anything I could about these guys. Now one thing you should know about me is that I am a man in my 50's and my musical tastes, while extremely broad, are not so quick to take on a new band or songwriter in today's music. I prefer the music and the artists I grew up with. BUT, after "LISTENING" to what Mr.Fallon brings to the table as a songwriter and a musician, I can honestly say I am extremely impressed with the talent level of each effort brought forth by the Gaslight Anthem, and now, THE HORRIBLE CROWES. Call this album a side project if you will for Fallon. The 12 songs on this Cd are nothing short of amazing, and perhaps "masterpieces". While on the surface these songs come off on the mellow side, Fallon's lyrics are intense and the music will resonate in your brain gaining more and more momentum upon each listen. If you are a fan, please do not over-look this release. You will dig it! In my opinion Brian Fallon and his Comrades are getting more and more well versed as artists, with each effort put forth. Again, nothing short of 5 STARS! for this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serene, yet raw. Fallon has the Midas Touch October 11, 2011
By scott o
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Fallon has soul. No one is going to argue this factual statement. He's well on his way to brush shoulders with the boss and his music only gets better with each album. This album delivers a hybrid dimension of Fallon that the masses deserve to hear.

If you've ever heard Brian Fallon's studio recordings for '59' Sound' and 'American Slang,' they are both ripped from vinyl with the deep richly smooth sound that enhances Fallon's voice. On the other hand, if you listen to 'Sink or Swim' or hear Fallon live, there is a huge degree of raw grace and to an extent, "dirtiness" that that stuns the hell out of you. This album is a combination of both.

Starting to gracefully looming songs like 'Last Rites' and 'Sugar,' the mood is absolutely serene. The album then breaks loose as Fallon flips his blue collar and unleashes his soul in 'Go Tell Everybody' and 'Maryann.' This is the Fallon that we've been missing from GLA since Sink Or Swim. He truly redlines his vocals and soul to deliver what may easily be the album of the year. In a time where bands are relying on electro beats and redundant chords, Fallon slaughters the competition with this album. His best work next to '59' Sound.'

5.0 out of 5 stars The Horrible Crowes are anything but March 6, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
These guys are phenomenal. I've been looking for music that's not over-produced, shiny, prepackaged crap, and this is it. The music is soulful, heartfelt, and if it doesn't make you want to sing at the top of your lungs and cry your eyes out, then you have no idea what good music is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds even the Gaslight Anthem work November 4, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is an amazing collaboration between Brian Fallon and his guitar tech (who is clearly not your average guitar tech). Vocally, they complement each other and while Fallon's reached for Springsteen-like achievements in music, he says he's also paying tribute to Tom Waits here. I'm not a Tom Waits fan at all (although I love Springsteen) but this album is amazing regardless of whom he's inspired by. The guitar work is great, and the songs range from sultry (second track "Sugar") to all-out screamers. There's a bit more of the screamers than I'd like, so I skipped a few tracks ("I Witness a Crime" and "Mary Ann") but the rest of the album is entirely solid.

The album starts off with a trio of incredible songs: the short and brooding "Last Rites", the aforementioned "Sugar", and lastly "Behold the Hurricane", which may quite literally be a lament about a hurricane. This is the single they've released off of the album. It's easily the strongest song and the first time we hear Fallon take the lead vocally although both vocalists are present in some form or another on nearly every track. The chorus soars with lines like "I age by years at the mention of your name". Follow-up "Go Tell Everybody" was available on the Internet as a free "buzz" single. Things slow down with "Cherry Blossoms", although there is a bit of gravelly Waits-like crooning at the end that the song could do without.

The pace picks up again with "Ladykiller", and we're once again treated to a rocking chorus about the singer's lover's previous suitor when we hear "'Cause I can smell him in your skin / I bet I taste him in your blood". There are many songs on this album like that where it's a delicious mix of melody and decent lyrics (see the amazing track 11, "Blood Loss"). This doesn't feel like a collaboration that occurred on a whim or just for fun, there's seriously good music on here. I own a couple of Gaslight Anthem songs, but this is the best I've heard yet out of Brian Fallon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album November 21, 2011
By blacks
Format:MP3 Music
I guess maybe my review might be a bit partial due to the fact that I love The Gaslight ANthem, but this album start to finish is fantastic. I enjoy the slower version of Brian Fallon as much as the rock and roll with a bit of punk that is The Gaslight Anthem. I hope that the Horrible Crowes will do a US tour, hard to imagine with the Gaslight Anthem going to the studio to start recording their 4th album in a few weejs though.
Just buy this album, then buy the discogrpahy of The Gaslight ANhtem, you will be glad you did. Im just glad real rock still exist!
