This appealing children's book will capture the hearts of middle-grade children who have moved past the stage of picture books and enjoy reading on their own, and, of course, who love dogs which is just about every child at that age. Stylistically, the author has made an interesting use of word play with "afghan", "purl" and other double entendres that also bring a smile to children's lips. A book written with love for children who love dogs.

Diane Star Helmer put together a powerful book which I think will inspire all authors and readers to approach life with a sense of wonder and Ms. Helmer and her books opened my own eyes to some of the beauty and charm life has to offer. She couples love of life with the passion of simplicity. I really am inspired by her writing and loved the story. I hope she writes many more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buttons: Symbols of life and love April 6, 2013
Elsie and Purl skillfully draw the reader into the story as they weave their way through events leading to the conclusion. The author has a great sense of pulling you along with her dialogue and building of her characters throughout the entire book. Everyone wins in the ensuing contest.

When hope, and a little help from Artemis Argyle's yarn, give Elsie the ability to create Purl, the dog of her dreams, the surprises only begin. Her once quiet life takes on a momentum with hilarious twists and turns. Significant unraveling occurs at one point! With cleverness, wit and fortitude Elsie, Purl, and newfound friends bring the story to a (fuzzy) warm-hearted conclusion.

Helmer infuses her story with frequent poetic references to the natural world.
She stretches and bends a common truth about ordinary things, and makes us believe in the mysteries that could happen. This was a delight to read.
