CHAPTER IL Captain Raymond had foreseen the probability that his son would be subjected to such an ordeal, and had tried--successfully as the event proved--to prepare him for it. Max was busy with his preparations for bed on the previous night, when his door opened and his father came in. "Well, my boy," he said in his usual kind, fatherly tones, "I hope you have had a happy -day and evening?" "Yes, papa; oh yes, indeed! Never had a more splendid time in all my life!" "In all your long life of thirteen years!" laughed the captain, seating himself and regarding his son with a proud, fond look. "No, sir; and such splendid presents as you i and the rest have given me! Why, I'd be the most ungrateful fellow in the world if I wasn't 'as happy as a king!" "Happy as a king?" echoed his father. "Ah, my boy, I should be sorry indeed to think that your life was to be less happy than that of most monarchs. 'Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.' "I want to have a little chat with you," he resumed, after a moment's silence, his countenance and the tones of his voice much graver than they had been a moment since. "I heard to-day that Ralph Conly, who exerted so bad an influence over my son some time ago, is to make one of the party at the Oaks." "Is he, papa? then I suppose you have come to tell me you can't let me go?" Max returned, in a tone of keen disappointment. "No," said his father, kindly, "I do not withdraw the consent I have given; you may go, but I want you to be on your guard against temptation to do wrong. "I am told Ralph professes to have reformed, but I fear it may prove to be only profession, and that he and others may try to lead my son astray from the paths of rectitude." Max looked very sober for a moment; then said with an effort, "I'll give up going papa...

About the Author

Martha Finley (1828-1909), the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, was a school teacher and author of numerous articles, essays, and books, the most well-known being the 28 volumes of her Elsie Dinsmore series. Turning to writing stories for young people as a means of supporting herself after a serious injury, Finley sold more books than any other children's author of her day with the exception of Louisa May Alcott. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Elsie's Family Expands Again, December 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Elsie's Friends at Woodburn (Original Elsie Classics) (Bk.13) (Mass Market Paperback)
From Elsie's New Relations (Book 9) onwards, Elsie herself has moved into the backgroud and her children and their families have taken centre stage. In Elsie's Friends at Woodburn the focus is again on the Raymonds: the Captain, his second wife Violet, his three children from his first marriage, Max, Lulu and Grace, and the babies, Elsie and Ned.

Most of the book is taken up with Lulu's struggles to control her temper, and to modern readers the seriousness with which this is taken might seem excessive. There are the usual escapes from near death, and beautifully described family parties, and readers of Elinor M. Brent-Dyer's Chalet School series will find a surprising connection with The Chalet School and the Lintons.

This book is as much fun to read as the earlier Elsie books. Lulu Raymond is a much more believable and attractive heroine than Elsie was as a child, although 'Grandma Elsie' is an appealing character. And Rosie Travilla finally gets her comeuppance!

5.0 out of 5 stars I just loved this Elsie book, September 13, 2008
This review is from: Elsie's Friends at Woodburn (Original Elsie Classics) (Bk.13) (Mass Market Paperback)
This amusing story trails Elsie's young granddaughter, Lulu, through both exciting times and troubling trials. To take you on a stroll through the book, there's festive parties, rattlesnake encounters, pet ponies to ride, devastating injuries, and a home full of love and compassion. You'll be able to see Lulu grow in spirit to get past her famous tempers, with both her Heavenly & Earthly fathers guiding her.

Personally, I just loved this Elsie book, and I couldn't wait to finish it! I'm excited to read book #14 next.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Read, Bad Quality, July 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love the Elsie books and quite enjoyed this one. However, the quality of the digitalized text was not very good. There were frequent misspellings and random line breaks. More so than many books I've purchased on the Kindle for free. I found it much easier to read the free PDF version I found on Google books.
