Whether it's a cabbie sharing egg creams with a prostitute a couple nights a week or the girlfriend of a sailor coming to terms with his infidelity, the stories in Walter Bjorkman's Elsie's World are both hauntingly poetic as they are intriguing and profound vignettes of tormented souls and somber life altering, life defining moments. The language is rich and vivid which immediately reminds one of DeLillo, Pynchon, or Dybek. These stories permeate into your consciousness and soul to stay with you long after you read them. Savor each story before moving onto the next one. Feel its power and allure. Enjoy the richness of the written word and the worlds that Bjorkman shares with us in this collection. You won't be disappointed that you did.

Jeffrey Miller,
Ice Cream Headache

This book shook my timbers. It's very real and has a lot of the Raymond Carver and Horton Foote aspects in the way the stories spill out with truth and a lot of dark sadness, but also with a hopeful aspect, that life can be better than we think. I highly recommend Elsie's World to all who love a solid story collection.

There are writers who write what they don't know, and I don't care how good the writing is, I can spot these writers by the distance I feel from their stories and characters. Elsie's World was written by a man who knows, who sees, who spins art from pure grit. Or else, he has me fooled. Either way, these characters come alive, disturbing and beautiful and real. My only gripe with Elsie's World is that I wanted more.
