5.0 out of 5 stars Majestic Moose, October 4, 2006
This review is from: Elusive Moose (Hide-And-Seek Books (Barefoot Books)) (Hardcover)
My nieces and nephews loved this book! It is a search for a moose, among all the other animals, with a moose hiding on every page. Kids love the rhymes and the great illustrations. On top of that, the book is educational with information at the back about all the animals mentioned, from the moose itself to arctic foxes, badgers, caribou, and flying squirrels. Do yourself a favor and put this on your Christmas list for the picture book lovers (and animal lovers) in your family. They'll love playing hide and seek with this moose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Find That Moose!, March 19, 2007

This review is from: Elusive Moose (Hide-And-Seek Books (Barefoot Books)) (Hardcover)
I have an 18 month old. As long as you keep reminding her that YOU are the one who is turning the pages, they are safe for the toddler set. She LOVES to point at the animals. All birds make a "quack quack" sound in her world. She will look at the pages for a long time and they really hold her attention. Sometimes we have to help her find that moose, but she's found him on her own as well and then she claps. The book will grow with her, too. It's definitely good for all early ages.

The story is poetic, but not sing-song and childish, it's refreshing to read aloud! The book itself is full of information and each page is a wonderful panorama of interesting things to look at. If you are unfamiliar with this artist, she illustrates in needlework. It's beautiful! It goes so well with the style of the story. This book is a natural, family-oriented classic keeper-for-the-higher shelf for sure.

Beautiful Moose!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Hide-And-Seek Book!, March 9, 2007
This review is from: Elusive Moose (Hide-And-Seek Books (Barefoot Books)) (Hardcover)
Elusive Moose, by Joan Gannij, is wonderful! My toddler delights in finding the hidden moose on each page and after the hundredth reading is now interested in pointing out the other animals in the verse. My pre-schooler also enjoys Elusive Moose particularly the information on the northern animals named in the book (located at the back). I can already imagine her sounding out the words and reading them to me one day. As a non-sewing adult I also marvel at Clare Beaton's illustrations. We never tire of reading and rereading this book! The pages of our Elusive Moose are bent and worn which I see as the signs of a well-loved book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome educational book for kids, October 11, 2006

Since our hero, Sterve Irwin(the crocodile hunter), isn't with us anymore, it is all of our duties to spread the word and educate others about animals. Elusive Moose is a great book to teach the young ones about some animals that they aren't familiar with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks good enough to eat, or at least good enough to touch, March 29, 2010

This review is from: Elusive Moose (Hide-And-Seek Books (Barefoot Books)) (Hardcover)
Using felt, buttons, and other vintage fabrics and bric-a-brac, illustrator Clare Beaton has created handstitched tactile collages to tell Joan Gannij's story of an elusive moose who actually isn't very elusive. Subsequent readings of the book will prove even more enjoyable as children successfully find him lurking about.

The truth of course is that moose really *are* elusive, and so even as someone who has lived in moose country (Maine), it is unusual to spot them in the wild. I have always enjoyed the moose as an iconic image, connoting quiet strength.

The resolution of the art in this book is excellent: each stitch is readily visible. Book includes a glossary of both animals and their tracks, all of which appear in the book. (Cottontail tracks are two long parallel in back and two smaller offset in front; are snowshoe hares really different?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great board book, January 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I originally got this book from the library as a picture book. I picked it out because my husband and I have tried to see moose when traveling to Canada before, but as the title suggests, they are elusive. I read this book several times to my daughter before I realized there was a moose hiding on each page. It's a very cute story that will teach about various animals, including moose. The nice thing about the animals that it covers is that they are different that animals that are typically focused on in kid's books (e.g., grouse, shoeshoe hare, marmots, caribou deer). Anyway, I liked the book so much, I decided to buy a copy for our shelf and was glad to see that is is available in a kid-friendly board book format. The only difference I have noticed is the picture book version includes a back page with more information about each animal whereas the board book does not.
