Grade 6-8?This newest entry in the series concerns Maria Blanca, a teen with no self-confidence and a rotten home life. During a frightening encounter with a mugger, a young man on the street comes to the girl's aid, but she receives a nasty blow on the head. When she wakes, she finds herself in Faery with Cyn (her rescuer) and his sister Deirdre. Maria is perfectly willing to stay in this happier world, but the elves' old enemies, the trogs, are on the march, led by a renegade elf named Mask who plans on wrecking the peace and complacency that reign there. Cyn is wild to get the elves whipped into action but his father, the king, is far more interested in wind-up toys than in war. The inevitable battle with the trogs comes about, Cyn dies, and Maria goes home. The beginning is rather sluggish, the action a trifle jerky, and the plot twist, in which readers learn that Cyn is actually Mask, is not a huge surprise. Cyn's announcement that he has been behind the destruction suffered by his countrymen in an effort to stir them up raises some interesting moral questions. For the most part the plot drives the story, with secrets and enough adventure to keep readers turning the pages. The hints at romance and the humor resulting from Maria interacting with three other humans from different time periods who also entered Faery balance out the tension. Though it lacks the depth and grace of Lloyd Alexander or Susan Cooper's books, this addition will be much read?and enjoyed?by young fantasy enthusiasts.?Patricia A. Born of Elven Blood was an okay book, but I wouldn't recommend purchasing it. Alot of it seemed rather cliched, and the writing style just wasn't that compelling. The characters and the world of Faery are likeable enough, but rather dull compared to all the other great fantasy books out there! To sum it all up, if you are looking for a great novel that will keep you hooked and last more than an hour, read something else.
