An Exciting, but Gentle Adventure,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Elves' Big Adventure (Hardcover)
My 2 year old son and 4 year old daughter both love this book. The adventure is exciting, yet gentle enough that it does not inspire any fear. In fact, the dragon is a gentle, guardian dragon - a perfect way to introduce little ones to the concept of a dragon.
The illustrations are gorgeous - suitable for framing! My kids especially love the fold-out extra-large page that shows the hot air balloon floating up into the sky at the beginning of the story. This book is popular with Waldorf families for good reason!

Daniela Drescher is without a doubt our favorite children's book illustrator. Her work is luminous and inspiring.
The plot of this book is more involved than in her other books (In the Land of Elves, In the Land of Fairies, In the Land of Merfolk). Since the drama is centered around specific characters, it's for a slightly older age group. Although my three-year-old enjoys it, it speaks more to my seven-year-old. I think around age 5 is about the time when a child would be able to come fully into the story. It also features a little bit of dragon imagery (it's a kind dragon, not a scary one), which makes this a perfect book for Michaelmas time (Sept. 29), if your family celebrates this festival. I cannot recommend this book any more highly. It is truly a treasure.

The story is pretty good, but what is striking is the artwork: magical. My son loves it.

My sons (ages 5 and 10) love this book! There are not many books for boys that have such a simple and kind story. Some wonderful surprises! A great adventure story and Daniela's illustrations are amazing.

My only complaint and concern with this book is the use of the word evil. I probably wouldn't have bought it if I'd known. This word may be fine in a book for children 7 yrs. or older but not particularly for those younger especially below the age of 6. The story is very good and the pictures are lovely and children are very interested in it and follow it with interest and I think most any child would like it greatly. But the word evil could have been easily replaced with another word or phrase.
