5.0 out of 5 stars THE Best Elvis Book
If you only have one Elvis book in your library, or one photography book, let it be "Elvis at 21"...you will never buy a more sumptuous volume. The printing of the images is phenomenal, with wonderful use of gatefolds. It is one of the very few art books I've bought that I didn't balk at the retail price.

I purchased this beautiful book but to my surprise it didn't comes with the clamshell box with a signed photograph and contact sheet, neither the clothbound portfolio case containing four limited edition photographic prints (11 x 14), neither an exclusive edition of Elvis Ships Out (a 48 page, cloth bound, 8 x 10, keepsake archive of Elvis' stint in the US Army). So I...

This review is from: Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis (Hardcover)
If you only have one Elvis book in your library, or one photography book, let it be "Elvis at 21"...you will never buy a more sumptuous volume. The printing of the images is phenomenal, with wonderful use of gatefolds. It is one of the very few art books I've bought that I didn't balk at the retail price.

Wertheimer's photographs are collectively an artifact of our cultural history. It's amazing to see so many of them gathered together and in sequence. A much smaller selection of this body of work was published about 20 years ago as "Elvis '56"--this was my one-book-in-the-library, even back when I only had a photocopied edition. With this expansion, a whole new king is crowned.

2007 is of course the 30th anniversary of the King's passing. The world should expect a vast onslaught of new and revised offerings on the man. "Elvis at 21" throws down an early gauntlet so firmly, the other publishers might just as well crawl back into their niches.

Buy it, and wear a bib so you don't ruin the pages with your drool.

Alfred Wertheimer's photos is this book are FANTASTIC! It is a rare treat to be able to see Elvis at this stage in his life... when he was doing what he loved while still able to go in to restaurants, walk the streets, etc. and be recognized and appreciated by people around him, without being mobbed. What a wonderful time to cherish in these photographs.

Mr. Wertheimer's pictures of a young Elvis Presley are fresh and alive. This intimate look of Elvis' life and travels during the precipice of his rise to fame conveys Presley's magnetic and incredibly human ways. If you are an Elvis fan, you must have this book!

Love this photo-book, great image's of young elvis made by alfred wertheimer. Elvis show's a lot of emotion in the photographs and they are inspiring. Wertheimer did a good job with compositions and tried to get as close to elvis as possible. I listen to elvis constantly and every time i'm moved by his music, even though he did not write his own songs he made them his songs. Seeing this book shows the real elvis and you can see what it was like when he was just getting started.

Alfred Wertheimer provides us with a superb collection of moments from an American icon's young life. The images reveal a young man from a suburban family at the precipice of fame, fortune, celebrity and the unknown. The beauty of photography is laid out before you by an authentic craftsman. The true/authentic Elvis is revealed so we can all see that he was once truly a human. Just a man who put to use his natural ability to pioneer a genre that not even he could fathom its impact on American culture and generations of artists spanning the globe. For me, not really a fan of Elvis, but more a fan of photography and American history, this book is dead on in its delivery of the goods. Enjoy!
