Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Far superior to any previous home-video version, the huge deluxe edition of Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii captures over four hours of footage from the King's historic televised concert from January 1973. The main concert is presented in its entirety for the first time since its original worldwide satellite telecast, and reedited to remove the now-dated split-screen "montage" look. But that's not all--as a prelude to the concert, the first disc includes 17 uncut minutes of the "Elvis arrives" footage (only 2 minutes of which appears in the concert film) followed by the complete rehearsal concert that took place two days before the telecast. This rehearsal, which was released separately on video as The Alternate Aloha Concert, is rougher than the official show, but more relaxed and often more satisfying musically.

Leading off disc 2 is footage of five songs ("Blue Hawaii," "Ku-U-I-Po," "No More," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," and "Early Morning Rain"), including multiple takes, recorded after the performance, four of which ("No More" was the exception) were incorporated into the American television special that was shown a few months after the live telecast. Those four songs are not included in the uncut version of the concert on disc 1, but the original version of the American television special is also on disc 2 so you can watch the concert the way you've always watched it for the sake of nostalgia, or you can compare it to all the other pieces you've seen and decide which you like better. Either way, Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii is an embarrassment of riches that's rivaled only by its companion release, the three-disc deluxe edition of Elvis's '68 Comeback Special. --David Horiuchi

4.0 out of 5 stars No bells and whistles, just the basic 1973 special December 26, 2006
By A Fan
Format:DVD
This DVD is a basic presentation of Elvis' excellent 1973 Hawaiian concert TV special, which was broadcast worldwide. If you want an in-depth presentation, you should get the 2 DVD Deluxe edition. This DVD includes the footage of the original show including post-concert performances of 5 songs recorded for the US TV show. Elvis' performances are outstanding and this is one of his best live concerts of the 70's. The performance may seem simple by today's mega-star standards, there are no background dancers or pyrotechnic displays, and Elvis does not jump around the stage like he did in his younger days (of course he doesn't lip-sync to pre-recorded tracks like some of today's stars do), but it was top of the line for 1973. In 1973 few stars put on "stage shows" for their concerts. For the most part they just got on stage and sung their songs, and Elvis does a great job at that. This is proof that Elvis was still at the top of his art in 1973! The bonus material includes some photos but really does not add much to the set. This DVD should be enough for the casual fan and it is available at a reasonable price. Hardcore fans will want the deluxe edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the moment I've waited for March 18, 2005
Format:DVD
This Deluxe Edition DVD features pretty much everything you could ask for in regards to Elvis Aloha from Hawaii. You get the staged footage of Elvis arriving in Hawaii and greeting fans, which is actually pretty boring. You get the complete rehearsal concert that was taped two days before the live broadcast. Elvis shows more energy here than in the broadcast concert, but he forgets more of the lyrics and sings two less songs. You get the complete Aloha from Hawaii Concert, which has been re-edited from scratch. The show was originally broadcast with quite a bit of "montage" footage, which means multiple images from the concert seen on the screen all at once in video blocks, but almost all of those effects were removed from this version. After the concert, Elvis recorded five songs on stage with no audience, which were inserted into the concert after commercial breaks, played with montage footage of Hawaii. The complete footage of that recording session is here, complete with all takes of each song, with no footage of Hawaii. Finally, the original broadcast version of Elvis Aloha from Hawaii is included, minus the commercials. What more can you ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis Aloha From Hawaii May 4, 2000
By Mr.Mr.
Format:DVD
This is the way an Elvis DVD must sound like! Yes Guys: it's truly Dolby Digital 5.1. Aloha from Hawaii is simply the best sounding Elvis DVD I own. (If only the >That's The Way It Is< DVD would have that Sound! The >That's The Way It Is< documentation is the best Elvis ever captured on film, and the sound of the DVD is a big crime.) Aloha from Hawaii is a must for every Elvis fan anyway. For the last time he looks really great again after losing weight. It's obvious that Elvis is on some kind of medication during the Concert, he's not moving a lot at all, but hey: the man doesn't need to. He's getting more and more relaxed from Song to Song, his voice is great and the Gig has lots of strong moments. >My Way< sounds wonderful and >An American Trilogy< blew me away. If the Concert would only be 3 hours longer! When it's over, I always have the feeling that Elvis was just getting warm and started to feel comfortable on Stage. Aloha from Hawaii is the last great filmed TV performance of Elvis. After that the magic got more and more lost. He's not half as good (and himself) as he is in >That's The Way It Is <, but he's great anyway. Everybody who loves this man like I do: GET THIS DVD! It's worth it!
