Editorial Reviews

JAILHOUSE ROCK In one of his best-loved films, Elvis shows his stuff as a convict who uses his prison time to practice music and parlay his talent into big-time success. VIVA LAS VEGAS Elvis teams with Ann-Margret in the fun capital of America. He’s a Grand Prix driver, she’s a swimming instructor and radiators are on overboil from their first meeting. George Sidney directs. ELVIS ON TOUR The Golden Globe-winning chronicle of Presley’s whirlwind 15-cities/15-nights 1972 tour. Through 25+ numbers embrace the rocker Elvis, the gospel Elvis, the ballad Elvis, even the kung-fu Elvis. Between performances, montage sequences (supervised by Martin Scorsese) showcase Presley’s early career and movies.

An earlier review points out, very accurately, "On Tour" is a lot of Elvis getting in and out of cars... etc. How true. It is disappointing NOT to have more performance footage.
However! (I may be very bias on this point.) The video snips we do get are very cool... at least to me... as the movie was filmed the year I saw him for the first time. Every time I see the movie, I'm trying to figure out if certain scenes were filmed the evening I saw him.
Also, the lack of video, and the multiple scenes of fans going wild, and more, should be blamed directly on Colonel Parker. If you've ever seen "That's The Way It Is" (Original Release), it's cut up almost as bad as "On Tour". Again, this was Parker's doing! Several years ago, "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition" was released. Virtually ALL the Colonel Parker touches were removed and the songs were completed instead of cut. In fact, I believe several songs could be added because of the removal of scenes of screaming fans and backstage BS. I highly recommend "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition" for anyone wanting a high quality Elvis performance video.
I have to give "On Tour" four stars because of the memories I have of that year's tour, and even though it lacks in many ways I'm still glad it was released. Maybe someone will attempt to restore it the way they did "That's The Way It Is: Special Edition".

I am thoroughly disgusted with this collection, what is wrong with these studios; I will never buy another DVD again unless I've seen it played somewhere else first. I first played "Clambake," then tried "Follow That Dream," and although they were both made in Letterbox, neither one filled up my 60-inch screen (they only spanned about two-thirds of the width--I was so disgusted that I didn't even try playing the other two films). It's not my TV because I have hundreds of other DVDs that play correctly; this is almost as bad as releasing widescreen films in a 4:3 aspect ratio (which should NEVER be done).

While I'm at it, I've contacted Amazon before on this, and they've done nothing, it's just as bad as ever. The majority of the reviews appearing on this collection aren't even about this collection, they rave about "King Creole" which is NOT even in the collection, so I don't know what they're talking about. Customer reviews for products are all over the place, and much of the time they are not related to the DVD or CD you're looking at. This is a total disaster--a review should ONLY appear on the page of the EXACT product it relates to, not some previous version, not a similar named item from another manufacturer, not an item that was part of a different collection, etc. Additionally, when reviewing movies, anyone buying a DVD has already seen it and knows the story (who buys DVDs they don't like), so constantly repeating the storyline, the acting capabilities, etc., is just a waste of words; what is desperately needed is the QUALITY, CONDITION, and SPECIFICS of the product, particularly for DVDs and CDs (i.e., is it really widescreen, DVD-r or real DVD, crisp or blurry, muddy or clear sound, secure or flimsy packaging, single or double sided, does it have CC, etc.).

I chose five stars for the rating because it was a easy process ordering, paying, as well as getting updates on the shipping process. For me what wins me every time is the tracking process of my order. Top notch. Amazon has always been my favorite site to order anything I desire. Fast shipment. Excellent packaging. This gift set is excellent. The films Clambake and Follow your Dream was the reason why I ordered this particular set. With the price, so reasonable. The other two were like bonuses to me.

Does this collection include the blu-ray book for On Tour?
The three discs (i.e., Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas, and Elvis On Tour) are housed in a single case. The book is not included. Hope this helps!
