5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage mid-career Elvis., March 17, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Elvis' Gold Records Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
This album is vintage Elvis from the early '60s, and it is recommended for anyone seriously collecting his music. There is less of the primitive raw youth of the pre-army music, and more of the smooth polish of an experienced performer. This is evident in the entertaining blend of finger snapping rock-'n-roll songs and the more subdued atmosphere of the ballads. This album includes "It's Now or Never," a peculiar footnote in Elvis' career. Elvis wanted to try a Dean Martin style Neapolitan love song, and "It's Now or Never" is the result. This song can either be enjoyed or ignored, depending on one's personal taste. I recommend instead the great sing-along tune "I Gotta' Know," the hard hitting rhythm of "I Feel So Bad," and the triumvirate of "His Latest Flame," "Little Sister," and "Good Luck Charm." The album also includes the slow-dance classic "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" This CD edition of the original 33 1/3 record album has several bonus tracks including "Follow that Dream" and "Can't Help Falling in Love." The collection is a good cross-sample of Elvis at mid-career before he was trapped in the quagmire of the inferior mid-'60s movie soundtracks. Definitely recommended for Elvis connoisseurs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Comprehensie Collection Of Elvis's Post-Army Hits, May 7, 2004

This review is from: Elvis' Gold Records Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
Released in 1963, the third volume in the "Gold Records" series probably is the best. Featuring a few smash hits and a lot of songs that haven't gotten their due yet. Let's take a quick walk through the cd.

Well, for starters, you got your basic smash hits. The sweeping "It's Now Or Never", the bouncy "Stuck On You", the evergreen "Can't Help Falling In Love", the bitter heartbreaking "Are You Lonesome Tonight", the breathtaking "Surrender", the poppy "Goodluck CharM", the guitar charged blues "Little Sister" and the charming "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" are all here in their top 10 glory. But just as good are the tracks that don't get enough recognition. Songs like "I Gotta Know", the optimistic "Follow That Dream", "Wooden Heart" (a # 1 smash for Joe Dowell), "King Of The Whole Wide World" and "Feel So Bad" are big, booming uptemp numbers, while "Anything That's Part Of You", "Wild Country" and "She's Not You" are among the prettiest songs in the Elvis catalogue. Not to be overlooked is "The Girl Of My Best Friend", which has an irrestible melody line.

This volume is essential to all Elvis fans. Get it today and make the king proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume 3 is a great example of Elvis' early post-Army career, October 26, 2002
This review is from: Elvis' Gold Records Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
My aunt has the original 1963 album. It's fantastic. This 1997 reissue of "Elvis' Golden Records Volume 3" is even more fantastic with the extra tracks. They do make the ablum longer. This time, like most times, the extra tracks are at the end where the old album left off. The original starting track, "It's Now Or Never", is thrilling, timeless, and romantic as ever. "Little Sister" is downright nasty and a great rockin' song! I love it, baby! Elvis shows in this compilation he still had that great singing talent after his return from the Army!

Don't ask me why this is my favorite Elvis compilation, but it's the one I couldn't do without. Probably 'cause it's the only place to find (Marie's the name) His Latest Flame and Lil' Sister on one current disk. I also have to agree with a previous listener, this is a great CD master from the original tapes but with the "vinyl sound". If you're giving someone their first Elvis album this is perfect.

I'm not sure what niche this CD will fill for most people, the CD insert states that this is a reissue of a 1963 LP with six bonus tracks added. I ordered it because "I Gotta Know" and "Follow that Dream" are a couple of favorites of mine and are hard to find on other CD's. All songs on this CD are in true stereo and have flawless sound quality typical of reissues from the well maintained RCA master tapes.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MOST DISTINGUISHED ELVIS' CD; THE VERY BEST ROCK 'N' ROLL SONG EVER RECORDED; THE PERFECT CD TO OWN, November 23, 2011
This review is from: Elvis' Gold Records Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
Volume three of Elvis' Golden Records is the most distinguished Elvis Presley cd that I own among the 87 Elvis' cds that frequent my large cd collection of approximately 935 cds. Volume three contains what I consider to be the very best song that Elvis ever recorded, Marie's The Name (His Latest Flame), Elvis' third best song, Fame And Fortune, his sixth best song, Little Sister, and his fourteenth best song, I Gotta Know. I also believe that Marie's The Name (His Latest Flame) is the very best rock 'n' roll song that has ever been recorded! (Move over, Buddy Holly.) Right from the first drum and guitar beats of Marie's The Name, we can hear the strong drum and guitar beats that drives this fast-paced and most outstanding rock 'n' roll song. Elvis does an outstanding job of singing the fast-paced and intriguing lyrics that tell a sad and captivating tale of once true love now broken. The complete irony is that the song lyrics exactly describe the broken outcome of my first marriage to a woman who's middle name is Marie! I first purchased volume three of Elvis' Golden Records as a record album at a gas station on a highly enjoyable fishing trip to Canada in 1963, when I was 15 years old. I first listened to volume three of Elvis' Golden Records when I returned home from the fishing trip with an eleven pound walleye. The high rock 'n' roll energy of this record album, played time after time after time, made me highly focused upon dating girls. Thirty four years later, in 1997, eight years after I had sold my record collection of about 400 albums to invest in cds, I purchased volume three of Elvis' Golden Records as a cd. It along with Jefferson Starship's Gold now occupy the two most distinguished spots in my large cd collection of approximately 935 cds. Every song on volume three of Elvis' Golden Records is outstanding music! She Is Not You is among the top 20 songs that Elvis Presley ever recorded. Anything That's Part of You is among Elvis' extremely pretty slow romantic ballads, although probably not among his 20 best songs. You will find yourself captivated and listening to volume three of Elvis' Golden Records time after time after time. Elvis Presley was the very best highly prolific singer that has ever sang rock 'n' roll, rythm and blues, and slow romantic ballads. Elvis Presley and Sam Cooke had the two best singing voices among all of the twentieth century singers of popular music. Elvis' singing voice was at its very best during the time period when he recorded volumes three and four of Elvis' Golden Records. Volume three of Elvis' Golden Records is the perfect cd to own and most highly enjoy if you want to listen to, experience, and most highly enjoy some of the best rock 'n' roll of the twentieth century! It has my strongest positive recommendation.

John

5.0 out of 5 stars Another childhood memory, April 9, 2011

This was one of three albums I owned growing up, before I started purchasing my own. I played it over and over. It was as good as I remembered it. There were also some bonus tracks including "I can't help falling in love with you", which is of course, the ultimate Elvis song. This is a very good collection.

For those of you wondering where i have been living in the past 25 years,it's the DEAN MARTIN's FAN CUB UNIT TRUCK.Now don't tell anybody i told you this.Getting down to business, youngsters always tell me that these songs perpetuated my conversion to mainstream pop songs.I see that RCA has done a good job by added a few tracks that were not there originally.I enjoyed doing O SOLO MIO(IT'S NOW OR NEVER),even if the copyright of this song did not belong to my country. Those songs are cheesy, but i still love them.By that time,i was fed up with rock'n'roll and i wanted to please the grandmothers who had always eluded me in the early years.
