Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jerry Hopkins was the first serious journalist to take Elvis seriously, writing the first biography. The Elvis bookshelf is crowded now, but don't let that put you off. This thoroughly revised and updated version of his two classic books deserves a shelf of its own." - Jann Wenner, founder and editor of "Rolling Stone"
"Jerry Hopkins long ago established the ground rules for serious biographical consideration of Elvis Presley. With a rare combination of seat-of-the-pants reporting and thoughtful portraiture, he creates a richly nuanced picture of a world in flux, both for Elvis himself and for the broad range of humanity that was - and continues to be - so indelibly affected by his music." - Peter Guralnick, author of "Last Train to Memphis "and "Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley"
"The book that Jim Morrison wanted to read. Jerry Hopkins retells the Elvis tale with both authority and compassion . . . Hopkins' tome remains one of the leaders in its field, non-hysterical but sensational enough in its own way, thoroughly researched and written in a manner that equates with all the best novels - 4 out of 5." -" Mojo"

I just looked at the bad reviews of this classic book on Elvis and could hardly believe these negative reviews.

This book came out in 1971 and totally nails Elvis' career from 1954-1971.

It contains the complete collection of all his records and is,probably, the best discography available - showing all his records' release dates as well as the sequence of 45s, EPs & albums (plus movies).

And if you want to really relive the unadulterated (true 50s) fans' view of the (pre-death) Elvis Story... there is no better account than the chapters called Sunrise & Sunset.

This is the story Elvis read while he was still alive. The story that affected Elvis and truly reached him the most. A story he was very proud of.

This is the Original Elvis Book that all other authors used to get a true & full perspective on whatever they wrote about Elvis.

To see this great book, so badly reviewed, completely stuns me. This is a five star book! The first full documentation of Elvis' career - written while he was still alive.

You'll never truly experience nor fully understand the full Elvis Story, without reading this first, original classic.

Much better books available on Elvis that are better researched.
This book is dated as most of it was written when Elvis was alive.

George Klein (Elvis' personal friend) stated at the Queens College Elvis convention in 1978, and I quote, "this book is 60% accurate." (I asked the question). Up until that point, I too, thought this was the "end all" biography. I have since found out, it was poorly researched. GK was right! The books that came afterwards (Alanna Nash's books, GK's book, Sonny West's book, Alan Fortas' book, Jerry Schilling's book) all demonstrate how thin, in terms of the facts, Hopkins' book really is. As far as discographies, this book is a joke...check out Ernst Jorgensen's book "Elvis Presley: A Life In Music. There are many, many others. The best biography, the one that eclipsed everything that came before, both in research and writing style, was, of course, Peter Guralnick's books: "Last Train to Memphis" and "Careless Love." Hopkin's book can't hold a candle to those books. Yes Hopkins wrote this book while Elvis was still alive, and Elvis MAY have read it....but that doesn't make this book great.
