Book Description

0435070444 978-0435070441 December 3, 1997

Are you looking to throw some gyration in your oration? These days, when auditions are bogged down with endless regurgitations of The Swan of Avon, why not get things all shook up with the King from Memphis? Certainly no stranger to the stage or screen, Elvis once said "the only thing worse than seeing a bad movie is being in one." Well, certainly the same goes for monologues.

Fresher than untrod-upon new blue suede, this one-of-a-kind collection provides an untapped resource of inspiring, witty, and entertaining monologues--all relating to the legend of Elvis Aron Presley.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Presleyana completists will certainly want to see this intriguing collection of monologues that together, says editor Mueller, "have ironically presented all the things that the real Elvis is and isn't." Some are touching explorations of what Elvis and, more important, the image of Elvis mean to people. Many are written in what might be called E-speak--southern American English with lots of references to hound dogs and Dixie cuisine--but "My Bonny Elvis" is in a mildly Scottish dialect. Uniting them all is that they are, finally, about the myth of Elvis, which has had effects far greater than anything the man could have achieved had he lived longer. Quirky and occasionally goofy or sappy, sometimes in genuine and revealing ways, these monologues are not all great writing. They are all sincere, though, and sure to please the legions of Elvis fans and maybe even send some to their own epiphanous encounters with his spirit. Mike Tribby

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't even like Elvis!, January 5, 2000

Okay, so he was hot, but I've never been much of an Elvis fan... you don't need to be with this book though! I was so impressed by the authors in this book, particularly the hilarious piece by Mcclintock who managed to incorporate all the writers I've studied in grad school into a piece involving Elvis. It was genius! So even if you don't care much for Elvis, I strongly recommend this book!

Man, this here book rocked my lil' old world. I mean who woulda thunk a down home Tupelo boy like myself could inspire such artistry? And from more Gettysburg grads than you could shake a pelvis at. Damn fine readin. E

5.0 out of 5 stars A hundred times better than I thought it would be, December 5, 1998

An enterprising producer in my playreading group assigned various monologues from this book for members to read. The readings were touching, funny, insightful, historical, and down right fun! I never thought it was possible to get so many creative interpretations wound around peanut butter and banana sandwiches!
