Editorial Reviews

Years before he meets Priscilla, 21-year-old Elvis Presley is in love with a small-town girl, June Juanico, from Biloxi, Mississippi. Elvis had picked June out of the crowd at one of his concerts. After a chance meeting a year later, they started dating in May 1956. "Heartbreak Hotel," Elvis' first national #1 hit is peaking at the top of the charts. He is yet to film his first Hollywood movie, and the legendary appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show are still months away. Most people, in fact, outside of a growing number of American teenagers, do not know the name Elvis Presley. The truly special summer of 1956 produced Elvis' first great romance, but also the end of his personal freedom. It's the summer that witnessed his astonishing rise to fame...and also the abrupt end of a simple existence to which he could never return. "Elvis - Summer of '56" contains the earliest and never-before-seen home movie footage of Elvis, which captures a rare "day in the life" glimpse of the 21-year-old Elvis.

It all makes the tragic trajectory that followed even sadder.

This one is fun to watch and listen to if you are a fan of Elvis or if you would simply like to know more about this man who had a fantastic talent to share.

A sensitive and cultural view of an early Elvis and his connection with his roots, his innocence and his love of family.

I was blown away by the amazing home movies of a very young Elvis. He was just 21 years old at the time and he looked so innocent and naive, yet he had the swagger that would become his trademark in later years. And the story of a girl who so randomely becomes his girlfriend, a simple town girl, was so sweet to see. Kind of a Cinderalla story. I thought I had seen everything there was to see on the King. This DVD is a great addition to my collection. Long live the King!

I found this DVD to be very informative and really enjoyable. Seeing Elvis as a young man before he became famous was rather touching, especially knowing what was on the horizon for him. There's a delightful innocence about the young Elvis that charms us in a much less self-conscious way at this point. It all makes the tragic trajectory that followed even sadder. Absolutely worth checking this out!

Film tells the story of Elvis' first big time romance with a small town girl during the period that his star was on its meteoric rise. Story is told in large part through interviews with his girlfriend and with others who were part of Elvis' entourage at the time. His girlfriend is disarmingly candid in telling us how they met, carried on their affair (all the while trying to avoid attention from the press, female fans, and Col. Parker, Elvis' manager), and broke up. Incorporates many old photos and home movies from his girlfriend and her family in telling the story. Very sweet.

June Juanico's summer romance with Elvis Presley before he became a star. She was 18, he was 21 and they were in love in Biloxi, MS. Photos, home movies and wonderful memories.

Summer of '56 is a short look at the time Elvis spent with June Juanico. The short show covers interviews from June and some of her friends and family and footage of some time she spent with the King. It was neat to see them fishing on a friend's boat and playing in the sunshine. Of course it is all in black and white but it could never dull out Elvis. He is quite young here.

I really enjoyed it.
