4.0 out of 5 stars Vancouver '57 Elvis press conference March 28, 2014
Format:Vinyl
Red Robinson was a DJ on Vancouver's 500 watt AM station, CJOR-600. On August 31st 1957, Red emceed Elvis Presley's concert at Vancouver's Empire Stadium (where Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile some 3 years earlier) and hosted a pre-show press conference several hours before showtime.

The 1977 LP entitled THE ELVIS TAPES contains the entire interview session and includes the clatters of jostling participant microphones. Elvis sat on a table, frequently glancing at the back of the room for cues from Col. Tom Parker on how to address difficult questions put to him.

The 22-year-old Presley comes across as polite and unassuming. He never loses patience with probing personal inquiries nor demonstrates any desire to abruptly end the proceedings. The recording concludes backstage just moments before E arrives in the stadium by car. Emcee Robinson can be heard faintly doing his intro as the crowd chants, "We want Elvis!"

According Red's Side One remarks, the Vancouver concert garnered Elvis his highest box office receipts for the entire 1957 tour.

SIDE ONE
[14:26] Single "Jailhouse Rock" from new movie | Touring harder than TV, films | No plans to retire | Injured by mob of girls | Denies Army enlistment | How E met Col. Parker | First love: spirituals | Anita Wood | Favorite actors

SIDE TWO
[11:40] Memorabilia | Wiggling on stage | Favorite singers | Favorite E record: "Don't Be Cruel" | Parents | Fistfights | Football | Too many cars | Clothes | Classical music | Teddy bears | Pre-concert backstage excerpts
