Review

'Fasten your seatbelt and hold on tight! Paul Lichter is taking you back to a magical time in Las Vegas when Elvis set up court and reigned as King. He may have toured the country, but when it came to live performances, Las Vegas was home to Elvis - The book in your hands is a virtual time capsule that will allow you to relive the excitement of Elvis on stage in Vegas.' Bud Glass, The King's Ransom Museum 'This is the ultimate Elvis book dealing with Elvis' performances in Las Vegas. It is an Elvis Presley fan's paradise - a front-row ticket to anything and everything related to the King's Vegas years. The extensive 'live' show chapter is easily worth the price alone. Paul Lichter has done it again.' Paul Dowling, president of Worldwide Elvis --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book surely looks good on the outside. It's well designed, includes nice pictures and the text is an enjoyable read. But a closer look quickly reveals that Mr. Lichter doesn't know the King too well. Tour pictures are claimed to have been shot in Vegas and sometimes they are even allocated to the wrong year. The text is no better, a lot of stories are allocated to the wrong Vegas engagements and I don't know why it should be a point of interest, that Priscialla and Linda were virgins when they met the King. Lichter claims to be the world's leading Elvisologist, but he obviously doesn't know the subject of his adoration too well. If one wants to have a nice looking book, ELVIS IN VEGAS certainly is a fine product. Everyone else should stay away from it.

`Elvis in Vegas' presents a fascinating view on this idol for millions. There are some pictures published for the first time and a short history of Las Vegas and of Elvis. There is almost as much text as there are pictures. The chapters cover what Elvis did, mostly in Vegas from 23 April 1956 through 16 August 1977. There are pictures of the advertisements, and with fans, casual shots and on stage. Fan stories of meeting him are included. We learn what he ate, the pills he took and what he said. Many details of conversations and activities are given, however it is left to the reader's imagination, for the most part to decide where these facts came from.

For those who love minutia there is an appendix with set lists, show dates and times, his stage costumes and the other members of the show. Fans of Elvis will love the fact that the pictures, even up to his later days are all very flattering and show Elvis at his best.

Even if you are not an Elvis lover, this book can be of interest. It describes a time and place that no longer exists, both as a city and as a part of show business. It is a fascinating description of a pop phenomenon.

Ah, back when Vegas was magical. This book captures the greatest entertainer who ever lived in what use to be the greatest town for entertainment. Since Vegas died when Elvis did this is the best we have to document those glory days along with the DVD Elvis That's The Way It Is. While the writer tells stories he did not have first hand knowledge of according to other books by the ones who were there, it is still well worth it for the pictures (some rare, some published before)that give us the idea of those once in a lifetime moments that sadly are now history. When it comes to entertainers with talent, charisma, looks, style, personality, voice and just plain cool there's Elvis and then there's everyone else. With todays phony vocal synthesiser enhancements and lack of true talent this book will help show why he was and still is and will forever be The King. Just listen to his live CD's or DVD's and flip through these pages and go back to when things were as good as they could get. Unfortunatley all we have now is what's "leftover". Thank You, thank you very much and good night Vegas. If you ever tare down The Hilton where Elvis made magic and turned Vegas into Elvis City, USA then you are closing the last ray of light on the tomb of what was once unbelievably awesome. Get this book.

What looks like a great book isn't so great on the inside. Some of the photos of Elvis are great with some really awesome rare ones and using tour photos to illustrate the suits that Elvis wore in Vegas is a superb idea. It's the text that's the trouble, quoting passages from Priscilla's "memoir" isn't going to win any gold stars and saying which girlfriend was a virgin or which girlfriend aborted Elvis' child, it has got to be hearsay or at best speculation. And what has Elvis' private life have to do with a book promoting his concert years in Vegas? It would have best to have been left out all together.

Perhaps Mr. Lichter should stick to books filled with concert photos as that's what he does best as the mistakes in this book are so glaring that he should have had someone proofread it first for accuracy. For example, page 162 states "Elvis changed a verse while performing Lawdy Miss Clawdy." Actually, the song in question was Love Me Tender. On the back sleeve, it states "Paul Lichter is the world's leading Elvisologist." If that's true, then he could have done a better job on Elvis' Vegas years than the hatchet job that he put in print. Buy the book for the photos alone and not the text and buy it used if you can as it's not worth the full amount. Mr. Lichter, you should have done better.
