Paul Elvstrom Explains the Racing Rules of Sailing has accompanied sailors to regattas since 1965. This new edition of the book--known to all simply as "Elvstrom" and famous for its plastic boats and wind arrows--incorporates the complete text of the International Sailing Federation's (ISAF) 2004 rules changes. It features color-coded explanations and interpretations of the rules with the help of two-color bird's-eyeview drawings. It also offers a full-color chart of race signals, a graphic quick-reference locator for the rules, a summary of recent rules changes, and procedural notes for filing a protest.

Yes, it's getting close to the end of 2008, but get either this book or the next version, for some real study on the mechanics of the rules and case studies.
In the case studies, is where this book really earns its price. There are clearly illustrated scenarios that make you understand the rules _in application_. I can't see how a serious racer can get by without this book in their arsenal. It won my boat a protest just a few weeks ago in a situation with two port boats and a crossing starboard boat!

Besides being a great resource, it has the plastic cut-outs so useful in explaining the rules or recreating scenarios on the water.

Many racing rule books are just too complicated and have a hard time bridging the gap between the official rule book and the explanation. Paul Elvstrom does just that - this is the only book on the subject you will ever need.
