Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Despite the media's waning interest in Chico Mendes since his 1988 assassination, there still exists an unspoken global network, a telepathic connection of imaginary vines growing from the dying forest where he was born, where he lived, and where he was murdered. There will never be another Chico Mendes. From a remote jungle he touched the inner landscapes of human consciousness. He remained committed to his beliefs. He had vision. Because he was a caboclo, of mixed -Indian blood, he understood the people, the forest, and the deep-rooted problems between Indians, seringueiros, and others before him. His tools were intelligence and non-violence. Nothing could stop him, but death, murder. His assassination wounded those who never met him. The lives of those who knew and loved him were dramatically changed forever. Because of the injustice of his assassination, the mere mention of his name draws a quick line between black and white. There is no gray. There is no mystery.

Franscisco Alves Mendes Filho was known in Xapuri, his native land, and in the world as Chico Mendes.

Who was Chico?

He was a son of the forest, a seringueiro (a rubbertapper who collects latex from a rubber tree) who understood the language of the animals, plants, rivers, and men. He had a special skill in making a great and strong case in defense of his people. He felt, thought, and spoke as an authority of nature. Well-versed in the ways of the Amazon, he incorporated into his speeches the ancient traditions of those who live in an intimate relationship with nature, who learn how to dominate the forest, and who name everything which exists in their domain.

As a defender of the forests and the rivers of Acre, he witnessed the devastation brought to them throughout the years. The devastation brought by those who act from the interest of capitalism rather than the interests of nature and respect for life. He lived his life for the men, women, and childrem who shared his Amazon habitat. Like a Don Quixote he walked the world denouncing the destruction, misery, and oppression of his brothers. Millions were enchanted as he spoke of the beauty and potential richness of Amazonia.

(from the Introduction by Maria Jos Bezerra)
