Book Description

Emaline's Gift is the bestselling fantasy adventure by Christian author Brad Francis that reviewers have called an "answer to prayer," "wonderfully well-written," and "truly a miracle," all wrapped up in an exciting story that readers "couldn't put down!"

Thirteen-year-old Emaline is out running an errand for her mom one night when strong hands reach out and grab her. Her assailants are the wicked obeah, and Emaline soon finds herself used as a pawn in their battle with the Christ-following magi. Struggling to get away, Emaline can't believe her eyes when one of the obeah conjures a fireball in midair. Her life changes in a moment, and Emaline finds herself thrust into the middle of a centuries-old magical war between the magi and the obeah. When she's taken hostage, Aaron, Balthasar and the rest of the Washington DC magi need to find her and rescue her--before it's too late.

The first book in The Magi Chronicles is an enchanting YA fantasy full of thrills, action, magic, and the timeless truth of Scripture. Readers of all ages will find their faith strengthened even while drawn into the adventure in this wondrous story written to bring glory to the Lord of lords and King of kings.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

My kids and I love reading the magical adventures of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson together. We get drawn in by the storytelling, the action and the vibrant characters. As a parent, I began thinking how wonderful it would be if my daughters could read the exciting fantasy stories that they enjoy so much and strengthen their faith at the same time. Emaline's Gift, the first book in The Magi Chronicles, is my attempt at meeting that need. Readers of all ages can get swept away by the magical adventures of Emaline and the magi and find their faith encouraged by godly characters who follow Christ passionately at the same time. I believe fiction can be a powerful means of teaching and that we can grow a lot through meaningful stories. It's my prayer that Emaline's Gift encourages and excites you while drawing you ever closer to the King of kings and Lord of lords. Thanks for reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Answer to prayer!!!! December 11, 2012
By Jeannie
Format:Kindle Edition
I like to read bedtime stories to my children (ages 5 to 12) but have been trying to find more fantasy novels that use more Scripture and Bible truths. Brad really delivers with this book which is totally Christ centered and focuses on the Truth. This a great novel about the constant spiritual battle between good and evil and how God remains in control and is always faithful. I cannot wait to read more from this author!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter, X-Men, and Consequences January 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I thought a lot about Harry Potter and X-Men when I was reading this, but I loved the emphasis in this book on the true source of special powers and the real heart attitude the author states is necessary to keep these powers under control and growing. People can use or misuse gifts like Emaline's but there are clear, hard-hitting consequences. Everybody's tempted to use the powers for personal gratification. But nobody gets away with keeping secrets or lying or doing end-runs around authority for long.
I was also an average, invisible girl in my school days. But Emaline spends very little time in self-pity. She helps her mother, takes care of her baby brother, and the difficulties of their life really don't affect her attitude. I do wonder a little what happened to that milk she went to the store for, but what happens to Emaline totally eclipses the errand.
Micah was my favorite character, since we have a hard-of-hearing daughter who signs. I also appreciated the window into Secular Humanist philosophy, just enough so that real-life teenagers should say, "Hey, that's what we're learning everywhere, every day... "
I hope there's another book in this series already, because this one was mostly introduction and setup. Not that nothing exciting happens, because it sure does, but I need to get busy and read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what the author said it would be! January 1, 2013
By Cynthia
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this story for many reasons. If you read this book and don't like it based on the fact that it contains scripture and tends to be a little too preachy for you, then you didn't read the description. The author clearly states that his intention with this story was to write a book similar to Harry Potter while strengthening his readers' faith. He was successful. I'm a Christian, so I was expecting the use of scripture. I am not disappointed. Not only did this book fulfill my expectations in that regard, but it also satisfied my thirst for adventure and fantasy when I read a book. I was hooked on the first page and on the edge of my seat at times. There are a handful of typos here and there, but not enough to make me put the book down or think the author isn't a fantastic writer. And certainly not enough to take away one of the 5stars I gave to him. I look forward to reading future books in this series and recommend it to everyone. Even if you don't believe in God, you can still appreciate this story just as you might enjoy Star Wars and the use of the Force. If you're one of those parents who are against Harry Potter and would like a nice alternative, preview this book, and then let your children read it if you choose. Lastly, my hat's off to the author for the last page. What's on the last page? I'm not telling...

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Christian Fiction! November 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The first thing I need to say about this book is that it was written by a very good friend of mine. Brad Francis and I have never met in person, but our conversations over Facebook have always been enlightening and helpful- and oftentimes, quite amusing! Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s take a look at his novel, “Emaline’s Gift!”
“Emaline’s Gift” takes place in modern day Washington DC. Emaline is a 13 year old girl just trying to beat the boredom during summer vacation. Her whole life, however, is thrown upside down when a young man with mysterious abilities rescues her from a gang of psychotic teenagers. The young man, Anthony, is a Magi, one descended from the same Magi who visited Jesus as a child. The attacking teenagers are with the obeah, those with similar powers to the Magi’s, but fighting for the other side. Emaline suddenly finds herself in the middle of a battle between God and Satan, and the choice of who she will follow will determine her entire fate.
Brad Francis is a very good writer. “Emaline’s Gift” is written in the same style as Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, appropriate for children without being too tame. He describes the Magi and Obeah’s personalities and abilities vividly, and no two characters are the same. The action is intense, and the stakes are always high. What I found most impressive, though, is how Brad managed to keep the focus on God at all times. Even when the Magi are in a firefight (literally) with the Obeah, he makes sure the reader understands that their powers are not of their own doing- they’re gifts from God. The Magi will constantly stop and pray to strengthen their actions, seek God’s will, and… well, pretty much everything they do revolves around prayer.
