Book Description

December 1956
These treatises date from the last third of the second century. Athenagoras of Athens belonged to that select group of Christian laymen known as the Apologists, who supported the successors of the Apostles in the ministry of the faith by defending that faith and pleading for a just hearing before the pagan majority and pagan overlords.

This review is from: Embassy for the Christians, The Resurrection of the Dead (Ancient Christian Writers, 23) (Hardcover)
Athenagoras a Christian philosopher and perhaps the founder of the school that Clement of Alexandria attended has his two preserved (I assume this is the entire extant canon of Athenagoras) works here in this book.

The Embassy is for the most part a defence of the moral character of Christians moreso than Christian doctrine itself -though of course this is defended as well- in this work Athenagoras quotes very liberally from pagan poets.

The Resurrection sets up refutations against common arguments that are voiced contrary to the resurrection, while important of course this writing nevertheless does not carry its arguments very transparently from its setting to todays objections to the resurrection for it often argues against objections posited concerning matter which would not be posited today.

Apart from its patristic and historic value there can be found interesting argument.
