This review is from: Embassy to Tamerlane, 1403-1406 (Paperback)
This has to be one of the great unread classics of world travel literature. (How do I know it's unread? I obtained a copy through interlibrary loan from a large state university, printed sometime in the 1930's, which had about two dozen pages still uncut and unopened). Which is a shame, beacause it should be read. In my mind, it ranks right up there with Marco Polo and the journals of Lewis and Clark. Perhaps because it opens so slowly, people don't give it a chance. The first 40 pages or so are little more than an endless succession of Mediterranean area castles -- once you've seen one you've seen them all. So skip that part and start with his arrival at Rhodes. And then just read, slowly, and savor the experience. I enjoyed this book so much that after I returned my interlibrary copy, I ordered a copy of my own through this site because I know I will want to read at least parts of it again some day. |
