0125475705 978-0125475709 October 12, 1990 1
The purpose of this book is to present the technology requied to develop hardware and software for embedded controller systems at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Included in the book are hardware schematics of 8051 family development systems (single board and bussed 8051 microcontroller). Source code for both the 8086 and 805 family FORTH operating systems is published in the book. Binary images of the opeating systems can be generated from teh source code using the metacompiler also contained in the book. The book can be seen as a "toolbox" includingg all the necessary hardware and software information to be used in constructing 8051-based controller systems.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Embedded Controller Forth for the 8051 Family software was recently discovered to work on both XP and 7, much to the author's amazement.

Web course by author on book shows you how to build Forth51 microcontroller machines using ExpressSCH/PCB.

The book is more applicable today, because of ExpressSCH/PCB and Internet, than it was 20 years ago.

Find link to course by googling 'scripting languages pollute'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly sought after embedded software/hardware guide, May 11, 2011

This review is from: Embedded Controller Forth For The 8051 Family (Hardcover)
This book has a bit of a cult following. It's accessible to any well rounded technical person but is no non-sense, no fluff. It covers more area in more depth than anything else I've seen. It shows you how to interface an 8051 -- wiring it up on a bus to RAM and I/O, and then how to bootstrap it in the self hosting language Forth, including the joys of programming the 8051.

The 8051 is still widely available from places such as JR electronics and is still a darling of embedded applications, process control computers and so forth, and this book gives you the background knowledge and tools to program the thing.

8051 assembly is easy, Forth is fun and easy to learn, and the amount of system integration involved in building an 8051 system is minimal.

If you're thinking it would be fun to build your own small computer from parts, you need to do system integration for a custom product, or you want to learn what's involved in designing embedded electronic systems for large scale mass manufacture, this book is a great pick.
