The less-experienced engineer will be able to apply Ball's advice to everyday projects and challenges immediately with amazing results. In this new edition, the author has expanded the section on debug to include avoiding common hardware, software and interrupt problems. Other new features include an expanded section on system integration and debug to address the capabilities of more recent emulators and debuggers, a section about combination microcontroller/PLD devices, and expanded information on industry standard embedded platforms.

* Covers all 'species' of embedded system chips rather than specific hardware

* Learn how to cope with 'real world' problems

* Design embedded systems products that are reliable and work in real applications

Editorial Reviews

Review

I'm very impressed...[Embedded Microprocessor Systems] covers many aspects of developing embedded systems that engineers new to the field may not consider.
-Ken Davidson, Editor-in-Chief of Circuit Cellar INK, about the previous edition

This book will provide an excellent introduction for someone new to the art of embedding microprocessors into systems. It is labeled as an introduction to the design of embedded microprocessor systems, and I think it achieves this better than any other book I have seen. So can I recommend this book? Yes, very much. It is up-to-date, clear, and full of helpful tips.
-Dr. Alistair Armitage, Measurement & Control

Students and engineers new to embedded work looking for a general introduction to embedded system design will benefit from this book. It is suitable for engineers coming from the software or the hardware side. Highly Recommended.
-Chris Hills, CVu

From the Publisher

Included throughout the book are numerous examples, tips, and pitfalls you can only learn from an experienced designer. Not only will you find out how to implement faster and better design processes, but also how to avoid time-consuming and expensive mistakes. The author's many years of experience in industry have given him an extremely practical approach to design realities and problems. He describes the entire process of designing circuits and the software that controls them, assessing the system requirements, as well as testing and debugging systems. The less-experienced engineer will be able to apply Ball's advice to everyday projects and challenges immediately with amazing results. In this new edition, the author has expanded the section on debug to include avoiding common hardware, software and interrupt problems. Other new features include an expanded section on system integration and debug to address the capabilities of more recent emulators and debuggers, a section about combination micro-controller/PLD devices, and expanded information on industry standard embedded platforms.

5.0 out of 5 stars review, January 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This edition is great if you want to know something quickly and you don't need alot of explanation. This is not a very long book but it does have alot of terms that are important for the engineering career.
The later editions are an exact copy of this book except there is more explanation for the terms.

4.0 out of 5 stars longstanding ideas, October 5, 2005
This review is from: Embedded Microprocessor Systems, Third Edition: Real World Design (Paperback)
Ball presents a relatively nontechnical introduction to using microprocessors in an embedded system. Possibly, the text is aimed at an electrical engineering undergraduate who is having her first course on this subject. The book describes hardware and software issues. Both must be learnt, because your system will consist of a microprocessor and various other chips for memory, clock, I/O ... So, for example, an input pin on your microprocessor might be for a Non-Maskable Interrupt. This could be hooked to the output of a watchdog timer chip. Then, in the assembler, you need to write logic that is run when the NMI is called.

I first dealt with such ideas in 1981-3. An interesting aspect of this book is that it discusses many ideas prevalent then. Though obviously with faster CPUs and more spacious memories nowadays. But the ideas remain true. Which should reassure you as well. What you learn here is largely independent of a given microprocessor family and technology. You can take these ideas going forward for many years.

4.0 out of 5 stars presents good surroundings about real-embedded system, August 20, 2001
By
This book has wide contents about embedded system but brief. Readers will take many basic concepts of real system and embedded design. This book is appropriate to the beginner of embedded design.
