Buy this is all I can say!!

I also purchased Helen Jane Long's "Porcelain" CD, which is also good, but "Embers" is a much more enjoyable CD to listen to in my opinion.

The music is very soothing and relaxing.

The second album by Helen Long is in the same vein as her stunning debut Porcelain. Every song is a delight to the ears. Sometimes Long plays solo and sometimes with strings in accompaniment, always displaying a gift for melody and an innate talent for tinging everything with a George Winston-like melancholy. There are just a few truly exceptional new age piano greats, Michael Jones, Kevin Kern, Ludovico Einaudi, Jim Brickman, and, of course, the man who originated the art form, George Winston. Helen Jane Long stands right along side of them.

This music is absolutely beautiful and falls somewhere between the complexity of the classical genre and the simplistic beauty of the new age genre. The melodies are haunting and scenic in their nature and will definitely help you unwind during or after a long day. Definitely worth a purchase as an addition to your collection.

Have you ever bought an album of pretty or relaxing music that, however beautiful it was, just didn't wear well with you? I have this problem sometimes with New Age or pretty-pretty jazz pieces -- I'll rush to get them but they become simplistic after even a few listens and suddenly they just aren't something I want to listen to anymore. It's musically kind of the same principle as a quick trashy read -- sure you get a few fun moments but none you want to keep returning to. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you know what I mean!)

Well, this album is actually the opposite. It's pretty, sure. But more than that, there's something there that keeps me coming back. It's an elegant, beautifully written collection of pieces that are really lovely initially, but they also wear well on the ear, if that makes sense. Long's unexpected intervals and melodic choices make this more than just a pretty collection of foofy pieces -- instead, there's real depth and spare beauty -- she lets her melodies and progressions speak for themselves.

I was being thrifty a month or so back, so at first I bought just a few pieces from this album to add to my latest listening playlists (notably, "One Day," "To Dust," and "Everything"), but after awhile, I actually not only did NOT grow tired of the four I'd originally bought, I wanted more. So I came back to "Embers" and ended up buying the whole darned thing -- many of the new pieces even more than the first ones I'd loved -- and am very glad I did.

"Embers" offers lovely, delicate and elegant melodies that stay with you -- music for a rainy day, for writing, for creating, for thinking. It's music to be happy to and thoughtful to. It deserves an audience.

NOTE: Now I just wish we could get "Porcelain" on MP3 and I'd be a happy camper.

Wow, what a great follow on to her Porcelain CD! We put these on often when going to bed, or for peaceful sound when reading, or .. anytime you want to let your mind drift. Ms. Long has a wonderful talent for very simple melody and chords that beckon the listener to another plane. Simple, clean piano, lightly played, wide dynamics not needed and the strings add just enough depth to lend an additional ethereal quality. No favorite tracks here ... the whole is peacefully wonderful. When the CD ends, your mind aches for just a little more. We anxiously await her next offering!

My first introduction to Helen Jane Long. Her simplistic rhythms, cord progression and changes are relaxing and soul soothing. The music plays on your soul and will engulf your spirit, soaring to highs and safely restoring you to a peaceful place.

I have to admit I'm an old fart Rock n' Roller & R&B fan and I don't usually listen to this type of music, like all
great music it is hard to pigeon-hole her style, firstly she is wonderfully expressive & a technically gifted piano
player, who writes great little haunting pieces.

I would not call this classical, to me it's more mood or ambient than what I think of as classical, she reminds me a bit of Enya without all the synthesizers & over-produced echo chamber sound. Her albums have a very warm sound like she's actually playing in your living room with you.

Both albums are great, highly recommended for those who have had enough of the "Lady Gag Me With A Spoon" types & what passes for popular music nowadays.

Helen Jane Long doesn't try to dazzle you with technically difficult material. She excels with stripped down beautiful melodies that use emotion and the silent spaces to grab you. Some might call her style as film music. There is just the right dash of accompaniment of synth/winds/strings to satisfy. I also recommend her release called Intervention. The songwriting is just as perfect.
Her first release called Porcelain is great, but it tends more towards the neo-classical flavor...not quite as contemporary sounding

I am in agreement with Bill's comments in that this a really shabbily packaged release much akin to free discs issued with magazines. I am kinda "old fashioned" in that I like to read production notes and artists' comments on their work. However while the packaging is less than zero, the artistry is 100++. A collection of contemplative and studied pieces best enjoyed as the sun is setting over the ocean and with a glass of white wine in hand (actually, how I had my first listen during a visit to half Moon Bay). Ms. Long (who for some reason wouldn't accept me as a friend on her Facebook) deserves full and wide fame and acclaim for her talents. Buy this is all I can say!!
