5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Auditory bliss, September 28, 2009
This review is from: Embers (MP3 Download)
Considering this is her first solo album, it is quite impressive to listen at the eclectic mix of Trance music. Every track has a wonderful flavor that differentiates it from your run-of-the-mill club music. Beautiful arrangements that complement her vocal skills.

This is a must-buy album for any aficionado of Trance music. My personal favorite is 'Ride With Me.' I definitely know what I'm going to be listening to when I go driving.

I enjoyed all of Nadia's trance music from years ago, and iiO was always one of my favorite dance groups, so I was looking forward to hearing a solo album from this lady who combines the sounds of Pakistan and Queens, NY.

I was not disappointed. This is not the best album I've heard in 2009, but it's becoming one of my favorites of the year. Nadia/iiO fans should be aware that most of this is not trance or dance music, but more like "mellow alternative", yet it retains Nadia's trademark smoothness from her trance days. Indeed, her voice displays a powerful soulfulness on "Fantasy" that I had never heard from her before. Her vocal performance on that song and "Promises" really impressed me, and this whole album shows she has grown as a singer.

It's the perfect album for some late night mellowing out at home, or in the lounge with good friends. A good "after party" album. There is no bad music here, but my favorite cuts are: "Crash and Burn", "Be Mine", "Silver Lining", "Fine Print", and "Fantasy".

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunningly Beautiful, October 14, 2009

It's been eight years since the worldwide smash Rapture swept through the clubs featuring the stunning vocals of Nadia Ali. Since then iiO has released an album, Ali has departed the group, worked with some of the biggest names including Armin Van Buuren, Creamer and K, and Serge Devant. Now, she has dropped her debut solo album and it set for further chart domination.

Ali is determined to show the world she is a force to be reckoned with writing all but one of the thirteen tracks on the album. The tracks are all lush with Ali's melodious voice filtering through with steady beats playing in the background but never strong enough to over power the amazing vocal work.

Opening the album is Triangle which points out that Jack loves Jane who loves Joe. Who's ever heard of that story before? The unrequited love waiting to be noticed. Ali shows herself as a talented lyricist with her following the tangled web that emerges. Blending the story with the happily laid back beats, Ali shines on through with a strong opening to set the tone for the rest of her album.

The second track was her debut solo single Crash and Burn which became a club smash mid-2008 and reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Party chart. Listening to the track while it recounts a relationship that shone brightly and then faded, she laments that it was all worth it. There is a quality and richness of Ali's voice that is reminisce of her iiO days and proves again why she has such a strong following.

Not Thinking is a stunning track with its deep grooves and easily memorable riff. The story is about a fight between two lovers over infidelity where she says she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. It reflects an admission that she shouldn't have had the last glass of wine and apologizes for her actions. The inclusion of the piano as a key instrument plays out beautifully and blends with her vocals to create a very easy listening track.

Continuing on the musical journey of the album is Point The Finger which is going to be a club favourite with its deep grooves and quick beats. Ali's voice hits all the right spots with the track and plays out telling the story of an argument between a couple and laying the blame on each other for different things that went wrong within their relationship.

Her latest single Fine Print is another definite highlight of the album. The single has been remixed by industry heavy weights Serge Devant, Alex Sayz and even Brisbane born DJ TyDi who won inthemix's Top 50 DJ poll in 2009. Ali has created a niche for herself in the dance music genre and lives up to all expectations with this solid piece of work. The catchy lyrics, throbbing bass and melodious vocal work all culminate in a resoundingly high quality piece of work.

The pinnacle of Embers however, is Ali's second solo single Love Story. The single was remixed by major names including Andy Moor, The Starkillerz, Dresden and Scumfrog. The single reached number one on the Billboard's Hot Dance Club Party chart in April 2009. It is also the only song since At The End in 2002 that Ali has made a music video for and was an instant hit on youtube. Ali's rich vocals have been described as melted chocolate poured over whatever she sings erupt from the speakers and blend perfectly with the music. Neither Ali's voice or the music overpower the other and creates a perfect marriage between the two and prove just why the track took out the top position.

The final track on the album is the slower and ambient track Fantasy. Proving that Ali is not just a one trick pony, she uses subtle beats along and minimal instruments to create a melodious and soaring song. The end result is a perfect slower tempo track which is rich in content and highlights Ali's talent as a songstress.

In these days of easily disposable artists, it takes a certain factor to get a growing fan base. Nadia Ali has proven herself with multiple chart topping singles, a legion of true fans and a star that is certainly on the rise. Embers is just the latest piece of a truly dynamic career. It caters for the ambient, the club ready and the radio friendly. It's diverse and relaxed, ready for playing on any occasion. The album is well worth every cent and will be played for a long time to come.
