Book Description

An educational system of neuromuscular re-education known for its gentle approach, the Feldenkrais Method has been shown to dramatically improve individual functioning by increasing self-awareness and facilitating new patterns of thinking, moving, and feeling. Intended for those who need to improve their movement repertoire for professional reasons–-dancers, musicians, martial artists, gymnasts, and athletes–-as well as those wishing to reduce pain or limitations in movement, Feldenkrais is based on the idea that learning to move better can improve anyone’s overall health on many levels.

Using Moshe Feldenkrais’s own words, Embodied Wisdom clearly explains the basic principles underpinning his techniques, Awareness Through Movement (ATM) and Functional Integration (FI). These thoughtful articles and lively, sometimes humorous interviews explore a diverse range of subjects: the importance of bodily expression, the primacy of hearing, the mind-body connection, martial arts, sleep and consciousness, movement and its effect on the mind. Embodied Wisdom gives readers the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the scientific and spiritual principles behind the Method and offers sound strategies for incorporating it into their lives.

"Feldenkrais's work is innovative, gentle, and often strikingly effective.… I recommend the Feldenkrais Method to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain. I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies."
—Andrew Weil, MD

"The Feldenkrais exercises are ingenious."
—Sir Yehudi Menuhin, KBE, renowned violinist and student of Moshe Feldenkrais

"Feldenkrais has studied the body in movement with a precision I have found nowhere else."
—Peter Brook, OBE, theater and film director

"This is the most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function."
—Anthropologist Margaret Mead on the Feldenkrais Method

"Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais's method will be of great benefit to all of humanity. From my own experience, I know the remarkable results achieved."
—David Ben-Gurion, first prime minister of Israel

"Moshe Feldenkrais was one of the twentieth century's most original thinkers. This volume presents Feldenkrais's most concise and cohesive statements on the theory behind his work.… I hope the publicatio of this important and long-overdue book will help bring his ideas the recognition and the critical analysis they so deserve. I believe the Feldenkrais Method has the potential to help millions of people."
—David Zemach-Bersin, cofounder of the Feldenkrais Institute of New York

5.0 out of 5 stars The man is a genius September 26, 2010

I call him the Amazing Feldenkrais. Some of the simplist movements have helped me physically. He expresses some complexity of thoughts and theories that I really don't always comprehend completely. That is why he is Teacher, and writer, and I am not. His Awareness Through Movement book is awsome, and easier to read and understand. If more people knew about this stuff less people would be living in pain. Eileen K

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius...Pure Genius! November 16, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've had an interest in the work of Moshe Feldenkrais since I first read a magazine article about him around 1980. Since that time I've read every book and article I could get my hands on about the Feldenkrais method. Embodied Wisdom is a compilation of articles by Feldenkrais spanning many years. Taken as a whole they represent the evolution of Feldenkrais thought processes. This collection of his thoughts are an invaluable contribution to those who follow his work and to humanity as a whole.

His basic thinking is that moving, sensing, thinking and feeling are all interconnected. They all take place within the field of gravity. To change one is the change the other three. While we can't know exactly what is going inside the 'black box' of the human brain, we can see what is going on in human movement. Just because we move a certain way doesn't mean that it is the most efficient way to do so. The neural patterns that are automatically triggered when we initiate a movement can be relearned to become more efficient when we turn our awareness to the process. Improving the way we move through the kind of learning (he never considered it therapy) Feldenkrais promotes will thus improve our sensing, feeling and thinking. That is, no doubt, an over simplification but if it wets your appetite... Read the book!

I've encountered very few geniuses in my life...Moshe Feldenkrais was one. He was truly and independent thinker, looking at old problems in new ways. He looked at the human body and nervous system from the point of view of an engineer, a physicist and a Judo instructor. He spoke several languages and read an impressive amount of material in several of them. His synthesis of the thinking of others and his own expertise and experiences contributed an amazing body of wisdom to humanity. I have no doubt that his work will affect the thinking of others in many fields for decades to come.
