terrific urban fantasy, February 12, 2010
This review is from: Embrace the Night Eternal (Mass Market Paperback)
Although the world is not what he remembers having undergone the change five decades ago when he and friends (Dr. Elliot, Quint, Wyatt, and Fence) were trapped in a cave near Sedona without aging, Simon Japp still feels guilty for what he did back then. Still he and his buddies struggle to adjust as they battle the evil Strangers and the deadly Ganga. Elliot having found Jade (see Beyond the Night) is doing the best in their new compound Envy once called Vegas. Sage Corrigan was born after the "change," but like Simon has a nasty past that haunts her. To survive she and her cohorts at Envy need information on their enemy the Cult of Atlantis and the mysterious Remington Truth. What they know leads to Falling Creek, the last place Sage wants to return to; but she knows she is only one who can get inside along with her pretend husband Simon. The setting in Awakening Heroes makes the tale as the futuristic world of Ware feels genuine with references back to the old world and the mysterious malevolent Strangers and the Ganga enhance that eerie feeling. Through the flawed lead couple, readers learn more about the post apocalyptic America. Simon and Sage are a wonderful pairing as their respective past psychologically intrudes on the mission and on a future together. Joss Ware is two for two with this terrific urban fantasy. Fantastically Original, December 8, 2010
This review is from: Embrace the Night Eternal (Mass Market Paperback)
The Story There are powerful people who have glowing jewels in their collarbones, it makes them immortal. 50 years ago these strangers created a cataclysmic event that destroyed the world as we know it. The survivors in what use to be las vegas create a protected city - Envy. Simon was in a group of 6 inside a cave that somehow were frozen for 50 years. Once they awoke they had to settle into this harsh new world and adjust to their abilities. Simon can turn invisible. From the first time Simon saw the talented Sage he fell in love. Sage is innocent when it comes to relationships, but she knows she feels safe and is drawn to simon. They are part of a small revolution against the strangers. A settlement of polygamists, set on repopulating the world, have vital information they need. Simon and Sage agree to pose as a newly married couple. The roles they play begin to seem more and more real. Thoughts This story was perfectly played. This world that Joss Ware has built is dark and fantastically one of a kind. The pace is a little slow in the beginning, but it picks up fast. Sage and Simon were mysteries to me from the beginning, so it was nice to hear their whole story. I love this series, with so much of the same vamps, shifter, magic, fae paranormal romances this is a breath of fresh air. So totally original, I couldn't put this book down. The pace is fast, the plots kept my attention. This post apocalyptic world some people are intent on repopulation, these people came off cultish, but the book was well balanced between bad and good. This is a deliciously dark and enticing. The relationship is innocent that quickly turned into a unique untouchable love. The feelings come off the pages wonderfully.

Much better than the first. Great, steamy love story., February 13, 2011
This review is from: Embrace the Night Eternal (Mass Market Paperback)
What a difference one book can make! After lukewarm feelings for Beyond the Night, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book... especially since the lead character, Simon, didn't really spark much interest for me. But I'm really glad I did. Unlike the first installment in the Envy Chronicles, I felt real emotion for the characters --a connection I just didn't have the first time around. The concept for the series: the world is 50 years past a near-apocalypse. Many of the survivors are living in what was once Las Vegas, NV, which is now called N-V or Envy. Creeping around at night are killer zombies called gangas... and pulling their strings are the nefarious Strangers, people who were once human, now made immortal by implanting special crystals in their bodies. It is likely they were behind the "Change" that sent the Earth into near ruin. Five men from 2010 now find themselves in this new world. They had gone exploring in an AZ cave and went into a kind of stasis for 50 years, awaking only 6 months before the events of the story. They had not aged, but instead came out stronger, each with a unique ability. Simon was a crime lord's bodyguard in his old life. But he sees the Change as a chance to become a new man. He is attracted to Sage, a quiet computer whiz and member of the Resistance, trying to bring down the Strangers. But he thinks she is in a relationship with another man, so he refuses to pursue his feelings. Sage is something of an outcast in Envy, because she comes from a settlement that's like a breeding camp. She and Simon end up teaming up to infiltrate her old town to learn more about one of the leaders of the Strangers. While they're there, it gets harder and harder to fight their growing attraction. I really liked Simon. He's one of those men with a dark past and hopelessness about the future --but deep down he is a really good guy, worthy of love. I loved watching him fall in love with Sage and each time they get closer to acting on their feelings, the story gets hotter and hotter. This was a huge improvement over the last book and I'm sorry to see it end. Here's hoping the next book will be as good! 4 1/2 stars.
