Review

Embraced by Blood is an enticingly seductive read that will leave you enthralled! - Joyfully Reviewed, Recommended Read

The Sweetblood series is seriously sexy, the characters flawed in all the right ways, the vampire mythology familiar and distinct at the same time...counting down the days until TEMPTED BY BLOOD, Jackson's story, is released in February 2012. - All Things Urban Fantasy

L. London does a fantastic job building her characters. - LovLivLife Reviews, 4 stars

London continues the culture clash between her vampire factions, which means the danger and body count are increasing! - RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

From the Author

This is the second book in the Sweetblood series and is Lily and Alfonso's story. Please don't worry if you haven't read the first book. I made sure this book stands on its own. You won't be lost if this is your first introduction to the Sweetblood world.

As an author, I'd love to be able to say I had the events in this book all planned out. That I looked at a detailed outline then plunked away on my computer.

However, in reality it was much different. Lily and Alfonso became as real to me as living, breathing people. And living, breathing people are unpredictable. As I told their story, developments occurred and truths revealed themselves that I did not plan. There's a major plot point that even surprised me. I remember trying to change it, telling myself that I didn't think I could tell that story, but Lily and Alfonso wouldn't let me. Easy or hard, right or wrong, this is their story and my job was to tell it as authentically as I could.

So I went along for the ride and as it turns out, their way was much better than mine.

Happy Reading!
~Laurie

Warning: Bonded by Blood spoiler alert!

Alfonso. Dear, tormented, dark and sexy Alfonso. I have to admit, I didn't think I would like Alfonso after the first book, Bonded by Blood. Although, the twist at the end with him being Lily's informant did surprise me. But I still wasn't sure how I felt about him by the time I put the book down.

Jump to Embraced by Blood and I immediately fell for him. With his tortured past, his broken heart and his protective instincts, he's the perfect alpha hero and I just couldn't get enough of him!

Lily is the perfect companion for Alfonso. She is strong, fierce, independent and a kick ass heroine. She doesn't take crap from anyone, least of all Alfonso and I love that about her.

The love, the hurt and the heartbreak between Lily and Alfonso is beautifully written. It's believable and I felt myself empathizing with the characters. The chemistry between them is intense and Laurie London does an amazing job balancing that chemistry with tension, doubt and eventually, passion.

Of course, what's a Sweetblood novel without the Darkbloods? Further building on his role within the Darkblood society, the author gives us a look into Alfonso's past, the pacts that he made with the DB's and the consequences that are inevitable in the aftermath of his betrayal. Suspense kept me on the edge my seat and anxious for more.

Going in to this book I was slightly worried that it'd be just more of the same. Laurie London's vampire world is definitely interesting but it's hard to keep a Paranormal Romance series fresh. I was pleasantly surprised by Embraced by Blood. I'll even go as far as to say that I liked this book even more than Bonded by Blood. Alfonso and Lily are such great characters that it's nearly impossible not to get swept away in their love story. This novel has just the right mix of romance vs action.

Lily and Alfonso's chemistry as a couple and their charisma as individuals made this book for me. I enjoyed the pace at which these two rekindle their flame. On one side, there's Lily the scorned lover. On the other, there's Alfonso who's trying to protect his beloved by lying to her (yeah, because that usually works out so well). This vamp couple didn't reunite until halfway through the book. Which in my opinion, was just perfect! It gave them ample amount of time to clear the air and to set the record straight as to who did what and why. Their personalities are also very different. Miss DeGraff is a do-it-by-the-book type of girl while Serrano is the brute, fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants type. Needless to say, their views on how to get a job done differ greatly! I knew what the ending for these two would be early on but if the book had finished any other way I think I would have been disappointed. So no harm done there.

Aside from the main romantic plot line there are several other smaller ones that really helped to make this novel into a well-rounded read. There's the Darkbloods' newest evil scheme, the hostility between the Serrano brother's and many other bits and pieces that incorporate characters from the first book.

Review:
This second installment in the Sweetbloods series already had me captivated before I even picked up a copy. My two favorite characters from the first book where going to have a second chance at love! Alfonso is the true embodiment of bad boys, as he's on the run from the Darkbloods he infiltrated and betrayed in the first book. My slutty gal pal Lily, who is a single mother, ends up on the run from Darkbloods because of her ability to sniff out Sweetbloods.

London effortlessly allows readers to find out where the good vs evil stands, and the love story, without dumping huge amounts of information all over the place. There's good vampires (those who don't kill humans) and bad vampires (AKA Darkblood radicals who kill-kill). Most humans are unaware of the vampires walking among them and the many battles fought over them. Sweetbloods are humans with "super" blood. It can make vampires stronger, and it's allure is like crack.

Right up front I will say that this story was a bit more predictable then the first book--Bonded by Blood. The whole thing did feel a bit cookie cutter-ish. The romance between Lily and Alfonso getting there second chance at times had my inner cynic cringing at the ease of how things fell into place. Yet, the romantic in me couldn't help but fall in love and enjoy the chemistry. What I did enjoy more then the first book is that both characters are vampires, so I felt like I got more dish on the creatures of the night then the first book.

This is one hot'n sexy vampire read! London takes the classic vampire into her own hands, making the world and mythology distinctly her own. Alfonso was well worth the wait, and I gladly crown him as the King of Bad Boys.

Alfonso Serrano has earned the wrath of the Darkbloods, vampires who want to openly prey on humans, and now an assassin has been sent to kill him. Wanting to keep all those he cares for safe, Alfonso distances himself from everyone. But when the woman he loves is threatened, nothing will keep him away from her side. Lily DeGraff is a tracker for the Guardians, vampires who protect humans and only feed when necessary. The Darkbloods are after her so she can track humans with the highly addictive Sweetblood. She's reluctant to accept Alfonso's protection because the last time they spoke he broke her heart but when the enemy strikes close to home, Lily and Alfonso will need to work together before they find themselves at the end of an assassin's blade.

Alfonso Serrano was once addicted to Sweetblood and because of his actions while under its influence and his involvement with the Darkbloods, he feels he doesn't deserve happiness or love. Having fed information about the Darkbloods to the Guardians, Alfonso has made himself a target of a ruthless assassin and uses this has an excuse to abandoned those who care for him. Alfonso is a hero with a dark past and memories that haunt him still. I'm a fan of the tortured hero as long as they don't spend time just feeling sorry for themselves. Alfonso recognizes and admits his mistakes without it feeling like he's having a pity part. He's strong, fierce, resourceful and intelligent and the only big issue I had with his character his how he kept things from Lily. He doesn't tell her what's going on and makes the decision to not be in her life for her. I didn't not like his character because of this but it definitely didn't work in his favor.

Lily DeGraff is a tracker for the Guardians.
