Book Description

November 1, 1993
At the age of 31, Betty Eadie died after routine surgery. The events that followed can only be described as the most profound and extensive near-death experience ever recorded. During the time she was clinically dead, Betty was given knowledge of the afterlife that would make even the greatest skeptic think twice. As she traveled through the spiritual realm, she learned more about the laws and history of the universe than perhaps anyone before her. She explains with uncanny detail the reasons why we have chosen to be on this earth at this time in history, and how all out actions are growing experiences for our immortal spirits. In those few minutes that stretched into eternity, Betty's life was changed forever. In this special unabridged recording of Embraced by the Light, she shares the vision of a world she never imagined existed, and gives new meaning to the question, "Why are we here?"

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Embraced by the Light is an inspirational map of the afterlife framed in the moment of Eadie's death, and presents a possible answer to the big question, "Why are we here?" An easy read, its subtitle could have been "The Average Person's Guide to Near-Death Experiences." Although heavily filtered through Eadie's Christian worldview, her vision of the afterlife does not include a wrathful deity, but a figure of love and compassion. Some readers may find Eadie's repeated Christian references bothersome, and Embraced by the Light will undoubtedly raise a lot of questions along the lines of "What about reincarnation?" and "What happens to people who are not Christians?" --Brian Patterson --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From Library Journal

Eadie died at age 31 after surgery. During the time she was clinically dead, she alleges to have traveled through the spirit realm learning about the laws of nature and the history of the universe. The angels and other spiritual beings explained to her the reasons why different individuals chose to be on the earth and to accomplish certain acts. Her vision includes insights into the question, "Why are we here?" Our souls chose to come to the earth at certain times to be united with families that we had been soul mates with earlier in the spiritual realm, she explains. Perhaps her most intriguing insight regards the fall of humankind. "Eve did not sin because she was tempted but because she so desperately wanted to become the mother of mankind," she states. Much of her story is similar to other near-death experiences. However, she obviously includes many of her personal views about religious philosophy. Her use of mythical elements detracts from the credibility of her story. A better source on this topic is the works of Raymond A. Moody (e.g., Near Death Experiences , Sounds True Recordings, 1991) . -- Ravonne A. Green, Emmanuel Coll. Lib., Franklin Springs, Ga.

More About the Author

Betty J. Eadie, author of the international bestseller Embraced By The Light, had the most eminent, prominent and extensive near-death experience ever recorded. She has written several books in an effort to share with others what she was shown in the spirit world about God and man's existence, the meaning of life and what awaits all in the after life. Betty has given countless speaking events, lectures, radio and television appearances and interviews across America and abroad informing others that death need not be feared, the exquisite beauty of the spirit world, meeting Jesus, reuniting with deceased loved ones and the most important message of God's unconditional love: that all are here to learn to "love one another."

Betty J. (Stewart) Eadie is the mother of eight children, to-date she is a grandmother of sixteen grandchildren and has six great-grandchildren. She celebrated forty-eight years of marriage to her late husband Joseph L. Eadie Sr. before his passing in 2011. Betty was born in 1942 in Valentine, Nebraska and was raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation and in Rapid City, South Dakota. The seventh of ten children, her mother was Native American "Lakota Sioux", and her father was Scots-Irish. At the age of four, Betty's parents separated and she was placed in an Indian Catholic boarding school along with six of her siblings. Betty spent her youth in Indian Boarding Schools finally leaving them to marry and began a life that she dreamed of. Her dreams dashed, Betty remarried, this time to Joe who became her "rock" of strength and balance in life.

After nearly 49 years of life together, Joe made his transition to heaven February 8, 2011. Betty and six of her adult children reside in the state of Washington.

In November of 1973, at the age of 31, Betty J. Eadie died following routine surgery. After undergoing what has been called "the most profound and detailed near-death experience ever recorded." Her spirit separated from her body and she traveled home to check on her family who were unaware of her presence. She then traveled through a tunnel of blackness to a being of light whom she recognized as the Savior of our world, Jesus Christ. Betty was then sent to view various aspects of what she calls our "heavenly home." She walked through a beautiful garden, was shown the creation of this world, experienced a "life-review" and then was told she must return to earth-and why. Betty was then returned to her physical body with a life-changing message for all who will listen.

Enlightened by her experience regarding the afterlife, Betty turned to the study of psychology and the human response to death. She began volunteering her time at a cancer research center comforting dying patients and their families. Through her volunteer efforts, Betty witnessed the perceptions of others and their experience as they approached death, and even some, like herself, actually experienced death and returned. Betty also began participating in a near-death study with a local university. Compelled to learn more about the "total connection" of spirit, mind and body, Betty entered one of the largest schools of hypnosis in the world. She graduated at the top of her class, and opened a clinic to continue her examination of the subconscious mind; the spirit within each soul; and their connection to life, death, illness and healing. Betty used her knowledge of the spiritual principles she was taught through her near-death experience to help others overcome adversity and find needed healing that can only come from within.

For 19 years, Betty shared the knowledge and message of her NDE with family, friends and small groups while continuing to practice all that she was taught during her experience. Eventually she began speaking publicly to larger groups, one of which was the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS) as well as various grief groups and church gatherings. In 1987, Betty began writing her experience in pamphlet form to share with her cancer patients. Her efforts were brought to a halt when her father became ill and Betty became his sole caregiver. Then, in 1991, after the death of her father, she was prompted to pick up her writing again. However, this time she was "shown" how to finish the manuscript in book form. The result was the astonishing book, Embraced By The Light, whose phenomenal success quickly thrust Betty into the public spotlight. After "Embraced" was published, Betty gave up her hypnotherapy practice and began traveling extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, speaking on death and what awaits all beyond this life.

The extraordinary success of Embraced By The Light stunned the publishing world. Never before had a book by an unknown first time author, published by an obscure publishing house, demanded so much attention and become a long standing New York Times national bestseller. "Embraced" went on to sell over 13 million copies and stayed on the Times bestseller list in hardcover and paperback for more than two years, including a record 78 weeks in the prestigious #1 position. The worldwide attention and acclaim that followed its publication changed many lives, including Betty's. More importantly to Betty, the sharing of her near-death experience brought comfort and hope to millions of people by freeing them from the fear of death and dying. Its message of God's unconditional love also taught people to be less judgmental, and to live each day with greater joy and happiness. Such a powerful and timely message eventually made Embraced By The Light the fifth best-selling book of the decade.

The Awakening Heart: My journey to love, is Betty's second book. After her experience with God that gave her great tranquility and peace, her profound insights continued to evolve and Betty felt moved to share them by writing additional books. The Awakening Heart (which became a national bestseller only two weeks after publication) chronicles all that Betty went through upon her return from dying and gives further information of what she was shown in her NDE as well as subsequent visions. New insight is shared into Betty's personal challenges and triumphs as Betty shares how she and her family adjusted to her changes brought on by her experience and the new perceptions of herself and the meaning of life as well as the great loss she felt after leaving what she learned was her heavenly home.

Betty's third book, The Ripple Effect: Our Harvest, is Betty's first teaching book and answers hundreds of questions received from the readers of Embraced By The Light. Betty gives still greater details of what she was shown in the spirit world. The Ripple Effect is a powerful and moving book that demonstrates how each of our acts is more important than we know because they ripple out to affect countless other people. The Ripple Effect gives answers to many topics that include: why there are so many religions; why evil exists; the effects of abortion and suicide; the meaning of life; dreams, visions, NDE's, do pet's go to heaven, and many more.

Betty founded her own publishing house Onjinjinkta Books, to not only publish her own writing but also to produce other author's who shared her beliefs of what she was shown in her experience. Betty's third book, The Ripple Effect, was the first book published by her own publishing house.

Embraced By The Light Prayers and Devotions for Daily Living is Betty's most recent work. This book is both a reminder of truths and introduction to deeper understanding learned from Embraced By The Light. It is a book designed to be read every day and offers daily strength to its reader of how to weather life's hardships as it deepens one's connection to God. With patient and consistent use, this unique collection of daily devotions cultivates what Betty learned is the greatest of all God's gifts: unconditional love.

Today, after more than 37 years of NDE studies, Betty J. Eadie continues her quest by collecting and evaluating thousands of near-death accounts. Through lectures and workshops, she offers understanding not only of the afterlife with God but understanding of how to live this life in a fulfilling way. And, should it be part of Betty's mission, she hopes to see Embraced By The Light brought to film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps with death issues, December 23, 2000

This review is from: Embraced by the Light (Paperback)
This book helped me greatly in dealing with the death of my mother. It gave me a different concept of the afterlife. I was also greatly helped by the book An Encounter With a Prophet. I would recommend reading both books if you are dealing with such issues

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't matter if it's true or not, October 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Embraced by the Light (Paperback)
Oh, how these reviews have evoked emotion in people...talk about religion and the afterlife and people just can't deal with each other. Many are afraid to face their imminent deaths.

I gave this book 4 stars because it doesn't matter whether or not it's true. What Ms Eadie describes is a heaven where people do nice things for others, and love is unconditional. They have learned the principles of life: faith, hope, altruism, patience...and LOVE...things most people in our world have yet to learn. If this is indeed, as Ms Eadie states in her book, why we have come down to earth, then it is obvious by our world's problems that the education is much needed.

Whether or not it is true is irrelevant. I am an educated woman, not a religious zealot but not a close-minded skeptic either. I read the book with open eyes, and was entranced by her images of a perfect heaven. This book brought peace to a woman terrified of death; now my visions of a cold grave are replaced with a heaven full of singing flowers, perfect buildings and unconditional love. If the only thing that awaits me is indeed a cold grave, will it have hurt me that I lived my life with a beautiful vision of the afterlife?

Will I have lived in vain if I learned from this book to love others unconditionally, to give of myself, of patience and faith that my purpose will be fulfilled?

Judge for yourself how you will view heaven, but for God's sake don't attack a woman for her views.

5.0 out of 5 stars Embraced By Love, May 8, 2000

This review is from: Embraced by the Light (Paperback)
Embraced By the Light is one of the most beautiful books on NDE that I have ever read. Betty's amazing journey while she had "died" is truly extraordinary. After reading this book and the 2 books by Dannion Brinkley, I would have to say that I do not have a fear of dying! Dying is just the start of the next stage of one's life - not something to be feared. Our spirit lives on, and just sheds the physical body.

Our society thinks of death and speaking of death as "taboo". Yet Betty shows us that death is beautiful and loving. The love Betty experienced just overwhelms you and her love comes through this book to you. You cannot help but cry. There are many quotes in this book that you will definitely want to write down. This book will definitely change your life in someway and bring great comfort for those you have recently lost a loved one. Betty's life was forever changed because of this experience and her awareness and love of God shines through. It is amazing to me how many of us were raised to think of an angry, vengeful and hurting God, yet this is never seen by those who see God in the NDE. Again, Betty is her own worst judge as she reviews her life - not God or the light beings that she meets.

Melvin Morse, MD, another author/pioneer in the NDE field wrote a most inspiring introduction to the book. He describes this book as "a journey into the meaning of this life." He also states that this book teaches us "that our own individual lives are important and filled with meaning." Those returning back from NDE's bring back the simple and beautiful messages - "Love is supreme. . . Love must govern. . . We create our own surrounding by the thoughts we think . . . We are sent her to live life fully, to live it abundantly, to find joy in our own creations, to experience both failure and success, to use free will to expand and magnify our lives."

Once again, simple, timeless messages are brought back and those are of love, kindness, service and forgiveness. Nothing new, just presented in a different way, through a different messenger. As Betty says of the "clearly expressed Savior's message, Above all else, love one another."

I cannot recommend this book enough. I actually had to read it two times to make sure that I did not miss anything! It is glorious and the scenes that she paints when she is in the Garden, is remarkable. Passages of the book with stay with you, uplifting and encouraging you. You will think of this book during the day, as Betty's words slowly sink into your soul and ignite. This book can and will have transforming effects - it can't be helped!

Betty, even though it took you 19 years to share these experiences with the world - I for one am glad that you did and the difference you are making with others is astounding. I cannot wait to read your next two books! Thank you. Thank you.
