5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is really well done, especially for someone like me who needs detailed instruction! The book provides both step-by-step instructions and photos that show you exactly what to do. I have limited experience with the encaustic medium and found this book provided me with the directions to do a project on my own -- super helpful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basic starter guide
I've owned this little book for some time and I would say it is quite a good starter for the complete beginner to encaustic painting. It is clearly written and has some lovely illustrations. My main criticism is the limited scope of the book and its failure to add anything beyond the techniques and information already available at the time of publishing. If you have...

4.0 out of 5 stars great starter book, July 8, 2008
This review is from: Embracing Encaustic: Learning to Paint with Beeswax (Paperback)
On the back cover of the recently released, 2nd edition of "Embracing Encaustic-Learning to Paint with Beeswax by Linda and William Womack is the descriptive "the quick start guide to painting with wax". That perfectly describes this user friendly book with many color photographs enhancing easy to follow instructions for 6 basic encaustic techniques. There is an illustrated gallery where artists describe their own work using more advanced techniques as well as a short history of the medium and a resource listing. Readers can go to Linda's website for further information. Although the section on making paint lists safety concerns, I would like to see more information on the safety issues while painting-especially correct temperature levels while working with encaustics.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth the price, August 25, 2008
This review is from: Embracing Encaustic: Learning to Paint with Beeswax (Paperback)
This is a good addition to any "art process" library. Simply written and well illustrated, the book is in a size and format that is easy to use while working. It is concise and informative - with great resource links.

I've owned this little book for some time and I would say it is quite a good starter for the complete beginner to encaustic painting. It is clearly written and has some lovely illustrations. My main criticism is the limited scope of the book and its failure to add anything beyond the techniques and information already available at the time of publishing. If you have already done some experimentation with the media, or if you own "The Art of Encaustic Painting" by Joanne Mattera, then this book will not add to your knowledge. I was disappointed and did not find it a useful additional to my resources, but I acknowledge that many others here seem to love the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended, October 11, 2009

This book is not a good value. Little book with very little detail information. It has some nice examples of encaustic paintings to look at, but the information about how to create them is missing. The how-to-information is very basic and suited only for a beginner. I would recommend buying instead 1.) The Art of Encaustic Painting etc. or 2.)Encaustic Workshop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Encaustic Basics, February 16, 2009

I can remember the days when we had only one book (The Art of Encaustic Painting) to turn to for information on this beautiful painting medium; the Womack's have provided a detailed and easy to use source of information. "Embracing Encaustic" takes you well beyond the basics. The photos are well done and easy to understand. Plus, a website: www.embracingencaustic.com and a blog www.lindawomack.com will keep you updated on emerging techniques.

For full disclosure, I must confess that my work is also featured in this book; I'd recommend it regardless. Artists who work in wax love to share their tips and techniques and in "Embracing Encaustic" you will find many great ideas with great explanations on how to implement them. Wax on!

I was hoping this book might teach me new approaches to encaustic. It's a very remedial beginners encaustic book and if you already own "the art of encaustic painting" it's a waste of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book!, February 2, 2009
This review is from: Embracing Encaustic: Learning to Paint with Beeswax (Paperback)
This book is just what I needed to get started with encaustic. The step-by-step is extremely thorough - it's great to have so many full color photos to refer to. It is perfect for beginners and as a refresher for those of us who don't get to work in encaustic full time. I have done several successful projects using the book.

Fantastic overview of encaustic painting that is clearly written and has beautiful photos. A perfect book for those looking to exploring a new art form that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Covers the basics for those unfamiliar with the art form as well as looking at some of the more intermediate and advanced techniques.
