5.0 out of 5 stars This book saved me!!
I must admit that Lucinda Bassett's program (15 week taped program) and Dr. Bourne's "Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" are remarkable...but I feel that this book "Embracing the Fear" was the last "pill" I really needed to help in my recovery from agoraphobia. Once housebound, I have read many books on the topic. This book is wonderful... I have underlined and highlighted...

2.0 out of 5 stars not for general anxiety
I bought this book for generalized anxiety disorder. However, it is not very helpful for this. It claims to work for it, but the tips soley focus on panic attacks and agoraphobia, and not long term chronic anxiety which doesn't involve immediate fears.

I have underlined and highlighted almost the entire book. THIS is the first book that talked to me about MY fear--not fear of dying like so many other books describe but fear of the TERROR of a panic attack. I KNEW I was not dying...I was just avoiding my life trying to protect myself from having one of those dreaded attacks away from home. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I am currently finishing up my master's degree in counseling and will definitely use this with my anxious clients. I can't tell you how much this book has helped me. It is like my second Bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Advice and not Another Lousy Workbook, January 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Embracing the Fear: Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks (Paperback)
I have read and or purchased over 10 Anxiety books and this one was definiately a book worth reading. I hate the fill in the blank what did I do today to make me better garbage? I want general advice or a cognitive plan that works. I've suffered with my illness for more than 6 months, been on many different meds. (Still taking them) and tried many things. To me this book is better than any therapy I've had so far. This book will not cure you, but it will teach you how to "Cope" with attacks instead of fighting them. It also teaches you that self-talk is not always a good thing.

I have consumed every book out there on this subject. This is the best book for helping the patient cope and understand the condition. It has more helpful coping strategies than any other book on the market. It is upbeat and give you the sense that you can handle this, and you are going to be fine. I love their attitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars After 15 years of terror,, May 15, 2001

This review is from: Embracing the Fear: Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks (Paperback)
This remarkable book helped me to understand and see myself and my world in a new light. Being a male who "white knuckled" my life for 15 years, the book allowed me to seek a new awareness nearly opposite from what I felt the path to serenity and peace would be. No one can know the traps of panic disorder like those who live it. The recovering authors' insights have moved my struggles to insights, understanding and acceptance of myself, turning burdens into gifts. A life changer for me, I have shared with others, on my fourth copy.

When I read this book a few years ago I thought bull this would never work. But trust me it does. Facing and embrasing the fear instead of runnning from it does work, but you need determination and keep practicing the steps in the book. It WORKS!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, May 24, 1999

This review is from: Embracing the Fear: Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks (Paperback)
This book is great! The main part consists of 14 detailed strategies which tell you how to change your thinking, change your approach to dealing with anxiety, and be easier on yourself. It also contains a section with self-talk and strategies to use in a number of specific anxiety situations, like the mall and flying. It really helped me to reduce my anxiety and take it easy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! It helped me understand that I'm not alone, September 2, 1998

This review is from: Embracing the Fear: Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks (Paperback)
This book is great. It gave me a better understanding of what anxiety is and what I can do to live with it and not control it. I now realize that I'm not the only one whose felt this way before and anxiety is not a bad word, but just another bump in the road.It will take time, but I will get better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a cure for agoraphobia!, June 28, 2006
By
This review is from: Embracing the Fear: Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks (Paperback)
I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.

Get this book! It is so worth the small investment to retrieve your sanity and get rid of the panic and fear!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about anxiety, September 28, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Embracing the Fear: Learning To Manage Anxiety & Panic Attacks (Paperback)
When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.
