More About the Author

Donna-Marie is a wife, mother of five children, blogger, catechist, TV host, and sought after speaker who thoroughly enjoys her motherhood and considers it to be a sublime vocation. She feels passionate about inspiring and encouraging other mothers along their journeys through motherhood. Donna-Marie also writes about prayer, family issues, the Church, and the saints.

Donna-Marie was invited by the Holy See to participate in an international congress for Catholic women at the Vatican in 2008 which focused on "Mulieris Dignitatm: On the Dignity and Vocation of Women."

Donna-Marie was blessed to know Blessed Teresa of Calcutta for about ten years. They met more than a dozen times and shared a correspondence that spanned a period of ten years. She became a Lay Missionary of Charity (lay part of her Religious Order) and founded a branch of the lay Order. Blessed Mother Teresa wrote the Foreword for Donna-Marie's book, "Prayerfully Expecting: A Nine Month Novena for Mothers-To-Be" (Crossroad Publishing, 2007). Blessed Mother Teresa endorsed Donna-Marie's books: "Catholic Prayer Book for Mothers" (Our Sunday Visitor, Oct. 2005) and "The Heart of Motherhood: Finding Holiness in the Catholic Home" (Crossroad Publishing, 2006) as well, and encouraged Donna-Marie to write them and to continue to write other books as well to help mothers, women, and families. Donna-Marie feels she should pass on the blessings that she have received from Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta to others and she strives to do so through her writing, talks, radio and television.

Because Donna-Marie loves to inspire mothers, she created two series for EWTN television "Everyday Blessings for Catholic Moms" and "Catholic Mom's Cafe" which she hosts. You can check that out on EWTN TV. Donna-Marie can't help but weave Mother Teresa's wisdom throughout her writings and talks. A DVD for Season One of Donna-Marie's EWTN series is available at EWTN and Donna-Marie's website. It contains the first 25 segments of the show. The second set of 25 segments will air soon and will be available on DVD. Some segments are now on You tube. The Catholic Mom's Cafe DVD is also available.

Donna-Marie has received Apostolic Blessings from Pope John Paul II who has blessed her books. You can see some of Donna-Marie's writing work on the Internet via parenting columns and inspirational writings. She maintains several blogs and writes for several magazines and national newspapers, as well including L'Osservatore Romano, Magnificat magazine, the National Catholic Register, Our Sunday Visitor Newsweekly, Catholic World Report, Integrated Catholic Life and more.

I received this book at a time when I was struggling with just about everything. As a mother of 10 children ages 4 months to 20 years I was really feeling at the end of my rope. I had prayed to God for a life preserver and I'm not exaggerating when I say I think this book was it. It reminded me of why I do what I do and gave me valuable (and realistic) tips on how to enhance my mothering and my prayer life as well as how to be a better wife, friend, and daughter of God. I cannot recommend this book enough. I have dog eared pages and plan to go back and highlight as well. This book should be read by mothers young and old.

Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle is a Catholic wife, mother, catechist, and author known throughout the world. She appears regularly as guest and host on Catholic radio and TV shows and has a strong presence on the Internet where she keeps up several blogs including Daily Donna-Marie: A Dose of Inspiration and View from the Domestic Church.

In Embracing Motherhood, O'Boyle looks at two sides of the parenting coin: the joys and blessings for mothers and the special challenges they face "as we usher our children through life, raising out little saints to heaven." She presents this book as a help for all who hope to do their job as mothers well, "please God, and love your children to heaven while embracing motherhood with all your hearts!"

The book is divided into nine chapters with titles like Building the Domestic Church and Dealing with the Really Difficult Stuff. Each chapter ends with reflection questions and an original prayer. The text refers frequently to such sources as church documents, Scripture, lives of the saints, and modern Catholic and secular media.

Let's look at Chapter 4, First and Foremost Educator, as an example. O'Boyle opens with her view of the phrase "It takes a village to raise a child," which at one time she found "pretty accurate and even kind of idyllic." Now, however, she hesitates, recognizing that our culture is not based on Christian values. She cites instruction from the Catechism on the home as the base for education in virtue. The next section, "Don't Put That Garbage in Your Head," uses this quote from a priest friend's homily. O'Boyle then provides guidelines on guarding our senses of sight, hearing, and touch from the garbage of the Internet, media, and entertainment industry.

The first question first-time parents often ask themselves? "Where's the instruction manual?" (If we veteran parents, married or single, are honest, we often ask it, too, don't we?) Parenthood in general is bewildering. Add raising your kids' as good, practicing Catholic Christians, and it's doubly, no, triply so. What to do? Simple. Read the instruction manual. That is, read this book. It's practical, its wisdom accessible to anyone, and best of all, it will help mothers help themselves be the best parents possible. ~ Brian O'Neel, author, 39 New Saints You Should Know

Another beautifully written book by Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle! "Embracing Motherhood" is a must read for all mothers who are striving to be the wives and mothers God has called them to be. Donna-Marie offers many wonderful ideas for passing on the Catholic Faith to our children, through the rich tradition of The Church. She has raised five children and has a lot of wisdom to share with mothers who are raising their children now and are struggling with trying to create a "domestic church" in our families, while fighting the temptations of the culture. Through reading this book, I have a deeper understanding of how important my vocation of motherhood is and how I must keep my eyes focused on Christ, who will give me the strength I need to be the best mother I can be!

"I can't say enough about Embracing Motherhood! Call all your women friends, gather them together and share this extraordinary book. A truly exciting opportunity for individual or small group enrichment, it contains the best, most engaging discussion questions I have ever seen in a book of this kind. Packed with personal witness and real-life stories of women and their families, this sparkling treasure will move you to tears and bring you great joy. Its nine graceful, accessible chapters include beautiful little prayers by the author that are sure to draw the reader even deeper into contemplation and appreciation for the Church's transcendent wisdom, on a wide variety of topics critical to the health and happiness of Catholic mothers. Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle is simply one of the Church's best living resources for women. Her humble, heartfelt work never fails to reach into my soul, as she does in this superb, indispensable manual for mothers."
