"A perfect glimpse into America’s other half"
- HaveUHeard Celebrity News

It's the 1990s. 16-year-old Roshell McRady dances her way through High School, never quite admitting that she’s ashamed of her trailer park family home.

She listens to Madonna while wondering why girls her age swap BFFs about as often as some boys change their dirty socks; she empties enough hairspray until her bangs are feathered and vertical like a lethal weapon; and she agonises over how to convince Gabriel Harrison, the new Mystery Guy in town, to invite her to the prom - a night which threatens to turn into a disaster.

But then life takes a dramatic turn for Roshell, and her life changes forever.

A love story emerges from the anguish of Roshell's life, and when she leaves school and finds work at a casino, things don't get any less complicated for her - until one night a powerful dream marks out the exact path that she must take.

This highly readable novel of growing up in Nineties America has gained some rave reviews from readers on GoodReads:

"WOW. A profoundly emotional book."

"This was such an amazing book! It has twist and turns that you won't see coming. A truly emotional yet comical journey. Once you pick it up, you won't want to set it down."

"The book is so well written that I was feeling all emotions."

"It tackles some difficult subject matter and manages to still be funny and hopeful. I was hooked from the start."

(Mature Young Adult/ New Adult)

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Another thing Bellon did that I particularly enjoyed was take an unabashed look at class structures in America. Roshell, a girl from a trailer park who is forced to look after her cousins and has no male role models in her life makes for a perfect glimpse into America's other half, especially as that other half continues to grow in size." - Robert Devenuti, HaveUHeard.net (Celebrity News) "Well this book definitely embraced me and I certainly embraced it back! A rollercoaster of emotions takes you through the ins and outs of this novel as you unravel the world alongside Roshell as maturation takes place. A beautiful novel from a talented author." - Epona Reviews Reader reviews on GoodReads: "WOW. A profoundly emotional book." "This was such an amazing book! 5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional and a Must Read! June 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
The book is so well written that I was feeling all emotions. I loved remembering things from the 90s!

I really enjoyed the multiple point of views. It's nice being able to see what the other characters are thinking. The turn of events throughout the book left me laughing and crying at various points, feeling what Roshell was feeling. The love, fear, grief, and friendship found in Embracing You, Embracing Me led me on a rollercoaster of emotions. It was like I was right there in the middle of all that was happening.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Coming of Age Story June 2, 2012
Format:Paperback
Masterfully written, this book blew me away. I was not expecting the twists and turns which the book made. They did not seem to have much of a connection, though, and didn't always seem to move the plot forward. And a lot of the time neither did the characters. Things just seemed to happen in this book, things that surprised and stunned me. I liked the characters, though. They seemed to walk off of the page for me, and I could almost hear them speaking inside my head. The multiple POV narrative got me inside the characters' heads, which is something I really look for in a book, because it strengthens my connection to the people and their story.

This book is a coming of age story. It's Rochell's coming of age story. As we travel through life with her, we feel what she feels. We feel her fear, a fear that locks her inside herself, a fear that prevents her from taking a chance and allowing herself the vulnerability of loving. And we grieve with her, when the unthinkable happens. A grief which hurts all the more for chances not taken. A grief which leads her toward a new beginning. I found this book incredibly evocative. It's message is powerful. A must read. I highly recommend it.

I found this book to be nothing short of a fantastic story! Michelle Bellon has a way with writing great characters that you genuinely care about, which compels you to keep going until the end. This one is particular had me feeling the whole gamut of emotions and wishing there was more to Roshell's story... Perhaps it's time for another book???

Embracing You, Embracing Me is a classic coming of age story about a teenage girl set in the 90s. Rochelle's story starts from another character's point of view, her best friend Amber, which makes the beginning of the book a little confusing. However, once you understand the author's unconventional technique, it's nice to know what other characters are thinking in the moment of any given chapter's action or crisis situation.

Some might find this type of narrative distracting, but if you give it a couple chapters, it begins to flow better for readers. In fact, you might even like the extra infused character viewpoints. Be patient with this technique because once the novel gets focused on Rochelle's story, you'll be glad you persevered since the author's depiction of her characters is spot on for its time period.

Each decade in history has its own distinguishing hallmarks in terms of fashion, hairstyles, music, cars and so on. The author does a fine job of transporting readers to that era and depicting the Generation X teen and eventual young adult population. Rochelle and her friends move from high school to college and adulthood with very realistic highs and lows and with all the corresponding frustrations that come with mature adult decisions.

The book takes on some tricky subject matter for young women regarding date rape that readers could find somewhat trivialized. After reflecting on this portion of the book in context of the greater story, the author probably got the character's behavior right. It's a painfully sad, yet realistic situation a lot of teenage girls and young women find themselves in and choose to remain silent about.

Rochelle is both a likable and troublesome protagonist which probably helps in her believability.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this Novel! December 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Embracing You, Embracing Me is one of those books that called to my heart for me to read. I never expected this novel to be so powerful, but Roshell's story is an enthralling, rip-your-heart-to-pieces read. Michelle Bellon created the most amazing, heart-wrenching love story, and it broke my heart completely in two. I love and adore Roshell and Gabriel. Roshell's character is strong yet vulnerable. Gabriel is a beautiful, strong guy who's trying so hard to hold onto the girl he loves. Roshell and Gabriel's story went deeper than romance; it was about commitment--about what it means to give your whole self; your mind, heart, body, and your life to one person that will be your forever true love.

Embracing You, Embracing Me starts with Roshell as she's turning sixteen and going into her sophomore year, where she first meets Gabriel, who is a junior. Then takes us though the next six years of Roshell's life till she's twenty-one. Roshell's life is a dysfunctional one due to never knowing her father. But she still holding on to her one fantasy of her knight in shining armor romance, until one horrible night at a party takes that away from her, and at sixteen reality slaps her in the face and her fear; all men are liars, cheaters, and then they leave you. So, in her dysfunctional world, her motto to protect her heart from getting broken becomes: "Have no expectations." Gabriel is Roshell's knight in shining armor, and all he needs is time to show her his love and wait for her.

Embracing You, Embracing Me is an emotional heart-ache. When all you can embrace is the memory of love. I highly recommend Embracing You, Embracing Me, as a heart-gripping love story that will never let you go and one that I totally fell in love with. A must, must read!!
