3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite in the series
I enjoy the series, the characters, and the setting in Excelsior, MN, but this book disappointed me.

My first issue was that the parts of the book that involved John's position as a senior associate up for partnership were inconsistent with actual Minneapolis law firm life. I found those inconsistencies very distracting.

And I thought the...

Betsy is a 50 something woman who inherited a needlecraft shop from her sister, whose murder Betsy investigated in the first book of the series. Newly divorced, Betsy inherited a new life in a small town Minnesota along with the shop, and a collection of colorful characters who soon became friends. In this book, recurring character Godwin (Betsy's flamboyantly gay and invaluable assistant) is accused of murdering his long-term but recently estranged lover, and it's up to Betsy to find the real killer.

Reading this series is always a pleasure, and this book is no exception. However, I find one of the joys of reading books in a series to be the cast of ongoing characters, and with the exception of Godwin, they seemed very light in this book. Yes, they were there (unlike the last book in the series, which was set out of town) but they seemed nearly incidental.

Having said that, Betsy is a fun if uncomplicated protagonist, and Godwin an over-the-top and amusing friend in distress, and the book will charm fans of the genre.

Once again Monica Ferris has given me my money's worth with a good puzzle, fun characters and a delightful cozy mystery. I've read and enjoyed all her books, and hope for many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read!, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Embroidered Truths (Needlecraft Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
Monica Ferris continues to please with Betsy's antics! I love all the characters and always relish a return trip to Excelsior, MN!

In this one, Betsy's faithful assistant, Godwin is accused of murdering his boyfriend (John) and she sets out to prove him innocent. This story helps to develop Godwin's character as lot as well as provide an interesting plot.

I absolutely love this entire mystery series. This installment of Betsy Devonshire is as exquisite as its forerunners!! A mystery lover's got to have series. You don't have to be a knitter to love these!

I enjoy the series, the characters, and the setting in Excelsior, MN, but this book disappointed me.

My first issue was that the parts of the book that involved John's position as a senior associate up for partnership were inconsistent with actual Minneapolis law firm life. I found those inconsistencies very distracting.

And I thought the ending/reveal of the real killer too abrupt and incomplete. I didn't feel the author connected the dots between the killer's other crimes and John's murder enough for the murder charges against Goddy to be dropped.

Finally, I missed the interaction of the regular customers and wishes there were more times when they met together.

Even though I was not especially fond of this book, I do enjoy the series and will continue reading it.

I love the whole series and there were quite a few twists and turns in this one that I didn't see coming. It's a another good one to add to the list.

3.0 out of 5 stars so many loose threads, May 5, 2008
This review is from: Embroidered Truths (Needlecraft Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
What was the murder victim involved in that led to his death and why exactly was he killed? By the end of the story we are only given guesses, not facts. Did he kick his lover to the curb because he wanted to protect him or because he had fallen out of love? We are never given any insight into what made the murder victim "tick."

3.0 out of 5 stars good read, April 1, 2008
This review is from: Embroidered Truths (Needlecraft Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
I liked the book and Goddy is my fav character. He is different and to tell the truth he isn't boring like Jill- I mean really lets face it she is a square. I would like to see Betsy get a love life though I mean really she is only in her 50's- I don't like to do needle craft and don't understand it but I sure like these books!
