Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A stitch-lover's guide to the art of embroidery that is geared to either the novice or the close-to-professional, beginning with necessary materials and ending with finishing recommendations. Stitches are grouped in five categories, depending on the form or the function: outlining, filling, counted, drawn thread, and couching. Each variation on a stitch features complete instructions, including the level of difficulty, suggested threads and fabrics to use, written directions, and step-by-step photographs. Highlighted tips provide good working suggestions, such as the recommendation to practice and rehearse satin stitching to get it right. And more than 20 modern and sophisticated projects showcase particular stitches, with the reader's pick of a complicated, colorful Advent calendar, for example, or an elegant lacelike stole. This is the book on embroidery I have been looking for. I would particularly recommend it for those who have some experience with stitchery and want a really good reference book and to learn some new techniques.

The projects are beautiful and useful and the instructions for the techniques are very clear and thorough. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent for Beginners, June 22, 2007
I recently borrowed this book from the library and have been so impressed I plan to purchase it shortly. Most of the stitches that have been presented are accessible to a complete novice (there are some that are recommended for those who have some experience). The pictures and detailed instructions are much easier for me to follow the other books I have looked at, as a beginner myself I certainly would recommend this book to help get others started.

I adore this book. Everything you ever wanted to know about embroidery, or how to do in embroidery, is contained within. The instructional pictures are clear and detailed. The author presents the material in a very simple, precise way that is easy to understand. I especially appreciate the index of stitches and the general topic index at the back of the book. Makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Highly recommended.
