4.0 out of 5 stars Another great thriller by Charles Wilson
This begins with a fire and seems to end with a possible fire and an all new beginning. So what's in the middle? This is a fast paced thriller that grabbed my attention and held it to the very end. 3.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Thriller
Awkwardly phrased sentences interrupted the flow of dialogue now and then, but these missteps became easier to ignore once the story gained momentum. An interesting premise was made believable without a lot of technical details. The one thing I found unbelievable was that the police would allow a civilian to participate in trapping one of the killers. Still, a fast...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great thriller by Charles Wilson, March 6, 1999
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
This begins with a fire and seems to end with a possible fire and an all new beginning. So what's in the middle? This is a fast paced thriller that grabbed my attention and held it to the very end. Couples wanting a baby and they can't have one, so we have an out of the womb method of birth. Something is seriously wrong with the children. What is it? Does it have anything to do with being conceived and grown in an out of the womb manner? Or is it something more insidous?

Read this novel and you will not be disappointed at all. Charles Wilson has an penchant for keeping you on the edge of your seat. This is great and you will become a Wilson fan. I am looking for the sequel to this book and the movie on the Scifi channel.

4.0 out of 5 stars one of wilson's best, May 16, 1999
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
i thought that this book was one of wilson's best works, and certainly the best of his last four books published by st. martin's. it's great the way wilson pulls this large cast of char. and makes them all part of the story. he's really at his best when writing a suspense/thriller/mystery type story, and that is what this book is more of. hopefully we'll be seeing more of this quality of books coming from wilson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Affaire de Coeur rates Embryo a Five Star Read, January 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
Charles Wilson, author of the highly acclaimed EXTINCT, wows thriller audiences again with EMBRYO, a terrifyingly plausible book about the future of human fertilization and its possible consequences. Mr. Wilson's writing blazes across the page at the speed of light, hardly giving the reader time to catch her breath before he tosses yet another twist or surprise. However, in amidst all the terror and action and suspense, is a surprisingly poignant story of two people who are forced together by chance, then by adversity, and finally by love. An excellent mainstream book from an excellent writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars move over, John Grisham, July 7, 2000
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
Mississippi has yet another great writer to brag about. Embryo was a suspenseful, fast-paced medical thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. The technology used to grow embryos outside the womb was explained in layman's terms so that I pretty much understood it. And like great science fiction, it seems to follow real-life scientific developments (i.e., Dolly the sheep). What a scary thought that events in this book really could parallel real life! Charles Wilson always gives me something to think about. In addition, toward the end of the book, just when I thought I had it figured out, the plot took a totally unexpected turn. That shows a truly great suspense writer. I agree with reader from Newport News that Wilson can easily join the ranks of Robin Cook and Michael Crichton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great page turner, February 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
Detective and lawyer Ross Channing is visited by a famous model. She wants Channing to find a scientist who has experimented with out-of womb birth. Not being able to have a child, this is her only chance. The scientist has been missing for many years, having fled from his medical clinic in Mexico. Why did he have to leave suddenly ? What about the strange and disturbing stories the indians in the area tell about the clinic ?

I found this thriller to be a real page turner. Very well written with good characterizations. Wilson lets you think you've got it all figured out... and then surprises you. A thought provoking book about the ethical problems facing medical science in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling!, January 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
With the release of EMBRYO Charles Wilson joins Stephen King, Robin Cook, and Michael Crighton as the fourth horseman of the apocalypse. A taut medical thriller, EMBRYO not only keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, but also opens the door to let questions of morality and ethics seep into the characters and influence the plot. Charles Wilson's excellent research and mastery of dialog heightens the suspense, lending credibility and intelligence, swaying arguments from improbable to possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Medical Thrillers, Batman, this is a winner!, January 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
If your New Year's resolution was to stop biting your nails, you may as well forget it. Charles Wilson's latest novel, medical thriller Embryo, is likely to shock even the most prolific suspense readers.

Unable to bear children naturally, supermodel Bailey Williams hires private eye Ross Channing to find evidence of a medical advance of which she heard rumors - babies gestating from conception through to birth in a laboratory-created artificial womb. But as Embryo takes us on a wild ride from the burned-out ruins of a laboratory in Mexico to a make-shift lab in Bailey's home, we soon question the motives behind this medical miracle and the ramifications of its potential success.

In their ongoing pursuit of information, Ross and Baily uncover shocking evidence about the personalities of the precious few "experiments" that succeeded and have now developed into adults. Bailey and Ross must race against time to determine whether the deranged Dr. Post has helped Bailey to create a miracle baby or something far more sinister. Can a child created and nurtured outside of a womb feel love or possess a soul?

Embryo moves at a ferocious pace and this plot is so intense and disturbing that it might just leave readers periodically gasping for air. The novel scores big points in the areas of research and plot development - this is one medical thriller that hits very close to home and raises startling questions about medical advances that are no doubt within our grasp, if not already upon us. Wilson takes us on a terrifying journey that explores the deepest and darkest reaches of modern science and its perhaps inevitable advances. And Embryo establishes, once and for all, that Charles Wilson is one of the suspense/thriller genre's best writers.

Embryo is one of the best thrillers I've had the pleasure of reading and reviewing. Run, don't walk, and get a copy of Charles Wilson's latest medical thriller Embryo, and make sure you keep the lights.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad, February 9, 2002
By
This review is from: Embryo (Mass Market Paperback)
I thought this book was fair. I've read all of Charles Wilson's novels except Direct Descendent, which is next on my list, and this was not my favorite. I enjoy medical thrillers, but this book seemed to drag a little. The last few pages, where everything is wrapped up, were enjoyable, but this just didn't hold my interest like most books do. This was ok, but I know from experience that Mr. Wilson can do better than this.
