COENZYMATED FOLIIC ACIID and the MTHFR GENE
Our genes naturally code for, or program, the creation of tens of thousands proteins and enzymes—basically telling each of our 70 trillion cells what to do. The MTHFR gene specifically codes for an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme (also known as MTHFR) depends on folate and, significantly, also influences folate activity in the body.*
Many of us inherit the fully functional version of the gene, known as MTHFR 677CC. If you have this version of this gene, and if you consume the recommended daily amount of folate (400 mcg) in food or supplements, the enzyme functions normally.
It plays a crucial role in a series of biochemical reactions called methylation, which yields some of the most fundamental molecules of our bodies.
For example, they produce the biochemical building blocks for mood-enhancing phospholipids and neurotransmitters, such as serotonin. They’re also involved in repairing damaged genes and regulating how they work.*
However, if you inherited a less efficient version of the gene, known as MTHFR 677CT, your health could be at serious risk. The resulting enzyme has less activity— functioning at only 71 percent of normal, according to some estimates. This less efficient enzyme reduces your body’s ability to make all of those important biochemicals and leaves you at a distinct disadvantage.*
One of the consequences of the CT gene variation is that blood levels of homocysteine tend to be abnormally high.i Too much homocysteine damages blood vessels and is a recognized risk factor for premature heart attack and stroke. If you’re a woman and have the CT gene variation, you have double the risk of having a baby with a neural-tube birth defect, such as spina bifida.

I feel I get a little bit of sustained energy from these vitamins. The label recommends 4 capsules a day, but I choose to take 2.
