2.0 out of 5 stars A nicer heroine, please, February 20, 2009
This review is from: Emerald Nights (Lovegram) (Paperback)
Right away I knew I would have problems liking heroine Bethany Brasfield, she was very haughty. Her father is an archeologist determined to head to a dangerous part of Peru to hunt for a mysterious lost city reputedly filled with gold. A financier is funding the expedition and Bethany does not want to go but she is desperate for her father's attention and decides to accompany him since she has dedicated her entire life to helping him realize his dreams.

When they arrive in Peru she discovers that their guide Trace Taylor had guided another expedition months before but he was the only one to return alive. She insists that they not go but her dad is determined, so again she packs her things to embark on her father's quest.

Trace Taylor is exceedingly handsome and Bethany unjustly hates him for it. He is against taking her on the trip as it is a dangerous journey but she will have none of that. She is convinced the man is making up stories about the jungle. She is ridiculously naïve and hard headed too. She is insufferable around Trace and is beyond rude to plain out obnoxious with him. Almost all of her dialogue with Trace ends in an exclamation point. I mean this literally. She has not two kind words for him and believes the absolute worst about him. Moreover she blames him for any misfortune she has.

Bethany does enjoy his kisses and soon they become lovers. For about a chapter and a half she is kind but then the lost city is discovered and the party is under attack by another expedition. Bethany's father is hurt and who does she blame but Trace. When they return to civilization, Bethany knows that she must go back to Peru and the lost city but hates that she must employ Trace as a guide but he is the best available. She is at first her total hostile self. It is only after they become physical that she is considerate and kind.

This book had a decent plot and I must say there were some twists I did not expect but the heroine's stubbornness was just too much and this drops the novel to a two star only.

From the Back Cover:
SHE KNEW ABOUT MEN LIKE HIM

Back in the states, prim Bethany Brasfield would never have trusted a hard-drinking adventurer like Trace Taylor. Here in the Peruvian jungle, however, her lie and that of her archeologist father were in Trace's callused hands as he led them past panthers, snakes, and deadly natives on the way to a legendary ancient city of jewels. The all-too-attractive scoundrel obviously expected Bethany to fall into his arms every night. But she'd be damned before she'd admit to the wanton yearnings she felt at the sight of his rippling muscles, his mocking eyes, and his slow, devastating smile...

HE KNEW WHAT A WOMAN WANTED

Trace wasn't too happy about accepting Brasfield's crazy assignment to search for the lost treasures of time -- until he laid eyes on the archeologist's bookkeeper daughter. Her severe hair style and practical khaki clothing couldn't hide her delectable beauty. Though Bethany's superior air might have intimidated another man, Trace figured she'd thaw out pretty fast under the brutal jungle sun. And then, there was something about those long steamy nights filled with the raucous cry of wild animals that led even the coldest of ladies to take comfort in a man's arms -- especially a man who knew what a woman wanted...
