The second coming of Scott?, November 5, 2002
This review is from: Emerald Pathway (Audio CD)
A journey down Emerald Pathway is exercise for the brain. In fact, Scott categorizes his music in general as "Heavy Mental", since trying to peg him to any other specific genre unfairly limits the variety of music he creates. This latest production of Scott's is a masterpiece of continuity. My first thought while listening was that a thread connects one melody to the next, a river runs through it, a pathway, an Emerald Pathway, leads you from beginning to end. As many individual pieces of music repeat a sequence, Emerald Pathway repeats similar sequences throughout the CD, that are not copies of the earlier selections, but create a feeling of progression as you travel through the disc. I've seen that a number of music industry publications have already featured Emerald Pathway on their covers and in lead articles. I believe the attention is not only justified, but long overdue, since I think his previous release, When Spirits Fly, was also evidence that Scott Cossu is back on top of his game. Another feature of Emerald Pathway is that Scott is accompanied by artists you'll see him perform with in person - Ann Lindquist on flute, Steve Banks on percussion, and if you're lucky enough, Van Manakas on guitar, though the latter only happens occasionally. All are excellent musicians and deserving of the exposure this CD gives them. Five stars from me - "Oak Harbor Dale" Caldwell
